  • RIP Sheperd Paine

One of the greatest modellers, Sheperd Paine has passed away yesterday. Personally, it was after accidentally picking up his book, How to build dioramas, sometime in mid 90's that I started with this hobby.

Ah, that is sad news indeed. I met Mr. Paine just a few years ago at Gen Con. He seemed like a great guy, willing to chat, sign books and encourage all forms of miniature hobby work. In one book, I pointed out photos of a Boeing B-17 diorama he built and for which he wrote the tip sheet. While he signed the book and described building such a diorama in as little as a week to meet a deadline, I explained that I was inspired to start building that same diorama back in high school. I've been hooked on dioramas and miniatures ever since then.

I lost the unfinished model after several moves around the Midwest, but eventually, I will get another one and build it out. He asked me why I should wait for 'eventually', why not now? I didn't have a good answer, then, but now I really have no excuse.

Shep Paine will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fans during this difficult time.

An inspiration to many of us, very sad to hear of his passing.

Wow, I had heard his name mentioned by people before but never really seen his work. Thanks for sharing it. Totally on another level type of stuff.

Such a shame when a super talented and good person is gone.
