    • Cheers DL!

Its strangely simple, but I’m really happy with how the basing came out. Even if I did have to work out how to make large amounts of custom miniature gravel to get it to work. That’s a life skill, right?

          • Been a quiet month on the hobby front, I had real life to deal with. Part of which was in the form of a llama cake (on a 13" diameter board, to give you a sense of scale):

I've just started a piece to try and break out of my painting slump, which I blame on skin tones being a long tiresome process to get looking right. Instead, I've gone for a poncy artistic idea of painting en camaieu, in red as befits the Master of the Butchers Guild...

            • Love that skintone.

Trying to work out how you've primed it. Beige/brown with a white zenithal?

              • Yeah, it’s Badger Minitaire Bark (which is a kind of milk chocolate ish brown) with Minitaire Snow White.
Abandoned my usual grey/white when it was pointed out that the grey would reduce my saturation, and I wanted to be able to get richer colours.

Being able to just chuck red orange and yellow at the skin has made it way more fun, I’m going to keep going and use it to practice getting focal points and overall shaping right. Bout time I learned to do that

                • Aside from basing, I think he's done - quite quick for me, to be finished in three sessions (ok, so not complete complete, but basing and varnishing aside...)

                  • Woah. I didn't think you were going red for the whole figure! He turned out great, albeit not as I expected - thought you were going to keep the firey colours just for skintones.

                    • Not just him, but the whole guild probably

It’s tricky in some ways, and easy in others. Definitely fun and good for me as a learning exercise

                      • Another quiet period, and another Butcher painted red... Someone asked how I did it on the SFG forum, so I have photos of my planning and painting:

The last two in this bottom image are when I finished painting him, and then when I went back and tweaked some bits to shift the focus better onto his face and axe rather than a line along both arms. Which I like to think worked, and shows I'm actually starting to be more aware of focal points and such

                        • Looking good. Are you working those extreme highlights up a little more?

                          • Probably not, I’ve capped out at Sol Yellow in everything but the eyes/goggles on things (which are white, glazed with a bit of yellow over to keep it in the colour palette). Ruddy tiny face too, which made it a right pain to get any highlights at all on the face...

                            • Finally managed to finish another model. No base, but I'm glad she's sorted. Not sure why but the photos seem a bit blurred, despite me doing the same as I always do and checking the camera focus carefully...
