Thanks Tonbo - it's all about the sculpt. I think when I meet Sean next i may have to try to get something else he's done. :D

Coming along great--not much more to add other than what has previously been mentioned regarding the scar.

Really liking this you've done a fantastic job. My only 'helpful' comment might be to look at the smoothing on the skin, it looks a bit 'bobbly' but that might be the figure itself.

I really like how the colours bring this figure to life :)

It's a cracking model. Shame that it's OOP. The paint job is coming along very nicely

A little update, mostly basecoating areas, but the robes are almost finished.
I'm kinda settling into where the colours are going now, and I'm feeling fairly happy about them. The belt is VERY red at the moment, but that's cos I tried yellow first! It will be forced into submission and duely subdued.
Oh, and his eye is much redder now.

                C&C welcome :)

Nice! What's going on with the purple clasp thingy on his shoulder? Is that a basecoat for some wierd Gold color tech?

I love it so far. I love your color pallet and the shading and highlights look better.

The buckle is actually in shadow grey - but for some reason it looks purple, even in real life. it's going to end up as a NMM grey metal if I can manage it.

Yeah, I may wimp out, but I'm leaning in that direction at the moment ;)

Anyway, I'm getting some crit on another site and I'm being hit about 1. my highlighting being non textbook and 2. not going into a paint session thinking "today I'm going to paint this fold", as the details make the whole.

I don't mind hard crit, but it's made me think...

Is it better to focus on little details? How hard will it be to make sure it's consistent in colours (I mix a lot) if I paint a small piece before moving on to it's neighbour, rather than my current approach of "now it's time to add the first shadow to all the shadowy areas of the section I'm painting"?

I do enjoy reading articles and books on painting, but I haven't yet had a really heavy one on the proper application of light and shade and where to do it. In many ways this sounds like a useful and helpful read, but it also sounds a bit heavy on the theory side. I'm not good at processing this kind of information well. I really need to "see it" to understand what I'm looking at. I was miserable at art at school because I couldn't see where to start drawing, and shading really didn't make sense.
I'm plodding along at the moment, looking at real life and photo examples, as well as other people's painting. And I think it's getting better, but I know it's not right yet. I also think it's going to take me a long time to "get it". Is this ok? Does it matter? Should I go study and swot up asap?
At the moment I don't want to force myself into a theory session when I am just enjoying the painting. I'm worried it will make me more anxious (I'm an anxious person already), it will make me deeply resentful of my current work (although I know it's much better than I've done before) and I will feel miserable (I have SAD, so winter is not a good time to feel down) when I'm painting cos I can't get it right.

Any help, or did that scare you off?

Or is this the same thing I'm already doing, but need to do in even smaller sections.

Do what you enjoy. I mix a lot too, and being colourblind it can be difficult to get the same colour twice, so I tend to do big pieces. Most painter I know do the same, it save fighting for the right colour twice.

I know Scott and Brett both say push your boundaries and to a certain extent they're right but also enjoy yourself. Don't do something for the sake of it. That's what I tried to do with the NMM and then realized I could already see the figure in metallics.

Your style is good, I love this piece and was starting to think how I could achieve such a good result, so do what is comfortable, push yourself when you feel ready but above all enjoy it :)

non textbook highlighting? You mean there's supposed to be just one way to paint? Frankly that sounds ridiculous. There are numerous ways of working so just do whatever you are happiest with. The issue with just painting a fold at a time could mean that you lose the bigger picture and how everything works together. On the other hand it could mean that you'd feel like you have made more progress having a part that's finished. It's really up to you.

On the SAD thing, full spectrum lights are supposed to be good for helping cope with that.
