  • Greek Hoplites WIP (tt std)

Ok done my first 4 hoplites need a bit of feed back on the battle damage, not too happy with it think it will be ok for members of a unit but would want to get batter the more I do so feed back on whats wrong ( I think the black is too thick for starters)

Hoplite 2 and 4 are the best ones, their battle damage is really good. On hoplite 2 you can see where I think you have gone a little bit wrong on the other two, the bottom right bit of damage is too thick and also the white line is too thick. The placement of the slashes looks fine, perhaps a few more in the top area heading downwards as if somebody is trying to get them in the head with their sword. Maybe a few more 'nicks' like the damage occured from arrows and spears impacting the shield. They don't need to be big, just here and there to counter the long slash damage.

Hope you find my opinion helpful, hoplite 4 on the right looks superb!

Very nice! I agree some of the battle damage marks are a bit thick and fairly long as well. That being said, I don't know how much I would change. More subtle marks will probably be lost on the tabletop. Have you considered adding a bit of brown to the shields in a splotchy random pattern?

I may be wrong but weren't their shields made of metal, i.e. bronze or a mix of and therefore would battle damage neccessarilty be black and white?

If this is the case I maybe would have gone for maybe a darker shade of the metal rather than full on black.

I'm fine with the black, but you could always stipple it with a bit of the shield's colors to give it a worn look. I really lke #3. #2's shield just freaks me out.

I'm inclined to agree with War Griffon about the metal base under the shield design and one or two of the marks end a bit abruptly but for TT stuff that's really nit-picking. Going on the smaller pic (probably more like the way you'd see TT minis) No. 4 is great, most of No. 2 is great apart from the lower right mark which along with the marks on No.3 looks a little thick. Maybe the white line /highlight is a little thick?

Yeah I echo others comments, I'll believe the black though, just a bit tidier on the white highlight maybe. Looking pretty good though bud!

Yes, shields were solid bronze with a wood and cloth/leather backing.

Here are some refs you might find useful.

This one is the most accurate as far as being made from real bronze, just a shame its the smallest!
