Thanks for all the support guys. I've now applied for 20 jobs since Thursday, have 2 telephone interviews (one today the other tomorrow) and I contacted a firm that gave me a telephone interview in November apparently I'm still being considered!!!!
So although I don't have a job yet, things are looking a little more positive.

Tux, i will have a word with my brother-in-law, he is a partner in an accountancy firm in Hull. he might have some ideas or know of some vacancies for you
one of my wife's collegues is married to a guy high up in an IT firm so will put feelers out there to for you

BTW during all this I have been asked to interview early next month in Leicester. Thanks for all your support guys.

the afore-mentioned brother in law is from there. btw tux have you got details of your qualifications for the finance side? he's going to ask around for you but has been in hospital until recently so still getting back to it

Yeah, that's easy, my main qualification is a degree in mathematics, but I'm in the middle of an AAT course to back it up and I have a programming qualification in VB.
I have a lot of experience in excel and can produce automated spreadsheets and I can use sage accounts.
