Masking putty was really hard to come by - presumably because borax is another thing you can't buy these days. I tried some clever putty but it really was very stuff and it was too sticky and mobile for what I was doing, so I skipped masking + airbrush and painted by hand. I gave the masking thing a go at least.

The hairspray weathering didn't work too well - it was far too easy to go right through to the plastic and just taking off the top layer of paint didn't really work. I'd give this another go, but put down a hard coat over the to-be-weathered-down-to layer.

In the end I thought "stuff it", got my wire brush and file and weathered down to the plastic, re-primed any bare areas and then touched those primed areas up with metalics. All of this was quite disheartening, but a burst this week has got the weathering finished and the decals applied and weathered too.

    Skin up next.

I've seen folks in magazines use silly putty as a masking agent here in the US, though I'm sure there's a UK equivalent.
