    Really fallen off the Wagon eating wise thanks to 2 daughters birthdays and fathers day all within 3 days, plus a few other things has meant I have piled on 8lbs in the last 2 weeks, right before my final race for a few months.
    Annoyed with myself.

    Brett, sounds like you've been getting banged up pretty good, just be careful out there old man, us older guys take longer to heal! I'm sure you'll drop the weight when you get back on the bike.


    As for me, I spent most of last week in the ER and on my back (still on it, really) due to a herniated disc (usually referred to as a slipped disc). Not sure what I can/should do and am looking forward to seeing the specialist and getting some recomendations. I'm sure the first one will be to lose weight, so that's a no brainer. We'll see what else they say and what exercise I can do. I've never been in this kind of back pain, its really awful.

    back pain is the worst, bad genes and couple of car accidents means I often get a bad back, ranging from dull aches to sharp pains. Often you just seem to wake up with it!! Luckily I dont seem to feel it when riding often, though did yesterday on the trails but they are very rough where I am and a single lap is 2 hours.
    Got my final event for a while on Saturday, kind of looking forward to getting it out the way to be honest so I can relax a bit.

    So today it begins.....

    Anyone that doesnt know I kind of had a gap between events (next in October) so I thought this might be a good idea:

    I mean its only 96 miles right?!!

    Will easily be my toughest thing yet. Ive done 123 miles / 11 hours off road before but this is another level. Reckon I will be around the 16 hour mark and theres almost 10 miles thats pretty much hike-a-bike.
    Still 6 weeks to regain my missing fitness and boost it should be plenty!!

    So I am back on it. 3 rides per week. A normal 35m /2 1/2hr ride on a Monday, a short 1 1/2 hour ride on a Wednesday then a distance ride on a Saturday.

    The normal ride is my usual fare, have the odd interval sprint in and mix up the climbing between seated and standing. The distance ride I will start low, probably around 50 miles and build it back up to around the century mark. Where possible I will include some off-road sections. The distance ride going to concentrate on efficiency and keeping the heartrate moderate.
    For the short ride I have been doing a LTHR Zone 2 ride on a flat circuit but it does actually knacker me out as im hitting my top pace (around 18mph average on a mtb over 23 miles). Im tempted to switch this ride to doing the same circuit but ignoring heart rate and adding in interval sprints.

    I am also tempted to do a quick 30 minute session once or twice a week of hill repeats. House is on a hill, while its only small its enough to get tired on over that amount of time.

    My local leisure centre are probably giving me free RPM classes in support of the event so I will have on or two of those a week too.

    Off the bike I need to work on both my upper body strength for the hike a bike sections as well as my non-cycling leg muscles to cope with the same thing. When I did the True Grit last week I suffered leg cramps from the intense hike a bike sections. My aim is to do 30 mins a weekday of off the bike stuff rotating between cardio, strength and yoga. The two week days I am riding I will swap this 30 mins for a short dumbell session straight off the bike.

    No alcohol now until post event and eating real clean and strict. I want to drop a stone by the time I start, less to carry over that 10,000ft of climbing!!

    Bit scared!!

    First week (well 6 days as started Tuesday) of proper training for my charity challenge done.
    122 miles ridden and 5 off bike sessions done.
    Clean eating and no booze too.
    Aim is to lose 2lbs a week until the challenge making a total of 1 stone.
    Lost 5lbs this week so if to a great start.
    Was a tough week but hit the ground running. Long way to go.

    Weighed in today and gone up slight (3/4lb) but still getting trimmer as the increase is muscle I think and did have burgers on Saturday at an event plus had to skip my long distance ride last week due to a sore muscle. These next two weeks though are going to be my most intense getting ready for the West Highland Way. Hit this fortnight hard then begin a 2 week taper to the event.
    Im considering getting some walking in there too. I can ride all day hard without much issue but running/walking tire me out (different muscles) and I will have a few good miles of bike pushing and carrying early on in the attempt so dont want to kill myself from it.

    Been doing RPM class on a sunday morning, know the instructor and its kind of fun, completely different to my riding (the cadence is about double what I am used to!!) but its a good calorie burning and does help with acceleration. The leisure centre are supporting me on the challenge so getting some classes free so might up it to 2 classes a week until the event. They are only 45 minutes long which for me is just a warm up period normally!

    Got the fund raising past 50% now so thats good and time for a shameless plug!

    My back (knock on wood) is feeling a little better every day. I'm going to my first bought of physical therapy tomorrow!
