The new base/layer paints go on quite smoothly over a black undercoat, which is what you want if you don't want a bright yellow. Start with XV-88 (utterly stupid name) followed by Averland Sunset followed by whatever layer yellows you want until you get to the level of brightness you were after. Sepia wash will also help dirty it up a bit.

I dont use the new paints but I just painted Lysander and I start with a brown as a basecoat, kind of snakebite leather and work yellow into the mix as I get lighter

For yellows nowdays i use GW foundation yellow (i have the old iyanden darksun, but the new range has an equivalent)

That one has amazing coverage, and it basically covers black fully in one coat. From there I lighten it up with various mixes of yellow foundation and sunburst yellow until i get the shade I need

some nice vallejo ones (coming to a wampstore near you soon!) I tend to use yellowy browns rather than pure yellows
