    Massive voodoo international workshop

    Morning wampettes,

I'm current on the massive voodoo international workshop in Paris and thought that I would write a daily update on what's happening and how's it going.

Having arrived at the model workshop at about 18:00 yesterday after driving from London we were thrown in at the deep end covering (after an introduction) things such as emotional aspect by looking and studying various pictures. We went on to thinking about the way we paint and model, looking at things around us to gain inspiration and a little light and dark contrast theory.

I should mention that the venue is a modelling workshop that a local club owns and is full of model aircraft, tools and various model related stuff, cool place ( pictures to follow)

We then went on to prep a mini and straight onto basing. We were prompted to be creative and do something between a skyscraper and a football pitch. I think there are 16 people on the course and of course there's now 16 differen bases that we're going to be playing with today.

I'll write more this evening or tomorrow morning, but today I'm facing a 9:30 till 23:30 long painting day! Bring it on!

Oh, so far - its amazing!

Thanks for taking the extra time to volunteer yourself as a WAMP journalist, Megazord_Man. That's awesome. I always enjoy reviewing Roman's follow-up posts from his seminars, but it will be very interesting to see it from the perspective of the student!

Sounds fantastic, I'd have loved to do something like that.

Well as predicted yesterday was a long day! We started at 9:30 and finished at 23:30 and whilst being a long day everyone, especially Roman and Raffa made it extremely enjoyable. So far it's been a massive learning experience and one I can't help but think it's going to push me forward no end. It wasn't until I had their work up close I realisesd how shoddy my work really is! Wow those guys are good.

Yesterday we started with some more PowerPoint covering colour theory and contrast, closely followed by creating our own colour wheel via the use of water colours. At the same time we were shown the use of crackle glaze, the use of dried earth and a few other basing things. Afterwards we were free to try these on our own. Whilst Roman was doing this with us Raffa was setting up a display of his and Romans recent and wip work, including Raffa's slayer sword winning entry from gd Germany. We're free to pick them up ( carefully of course) and really look at them closely, crazy feeling holding something of such quality.

By mid morning we had primed the bases black then white. Under the guidance of Roman having seen another demo on his wet on wet base coating technique we started getting paint on our bases. Once we were all happy we went on to sharing them up with glazes, highlights and shadows.

Later in the afternoon we started on the figure itself, once again following a demo from Roman and Raffa we used the wet on wet technique to lay down the base and glazes to deepen the shadows and lighten the highlights. Their careful at this stage to say that the minis are still at a sketch stage and will need much more wotk today.

To finish the day we looked at more PowerPoint on metallics, leather and skin tones.

Throughout it's been relaxed, open and a happy, working together atmosphere. Both the guys have been so open and happy to help. It's been a laugh too.

Some Picts ( sorry for the quality - taken with iPad in the dark) more with normal camera to follow.

Right off to painting work again...

Sounds like a blast! Thanks for the review/reporting, maybe we'll see an article in Portal about the event?
Are Roman and MV organising these events on a regular basis? If so, how do one sign up for something like this?

Provided one gets a kid-free weekend, of course ;)

Thanks so much for sharing this Megazord! I will be joining a workshop in Hamburg in a few weeks, so it's great to read and see what amazing things I can expect :)
I would love to see the rest of the pictures you made! And of course the mini you have painted over the weekend!

@Endor: This is the first time Roman & Rafaelle give an international workshop. But I'm sure many more will follow. They do , regularly, have this same workshop in Germany. You can find more information on their website. And you can sign up through this German forum. But I've experienced that sending Roman an email works perfectly fine too :)

Making me slightly sad that I'll miss out the first evening of my one in October, but very excited for the rest of the weekend! Hope you get everything and more that you're hoping to out of the trip.

Well it's with a very heavy heart I say the painting workshop is over :( Without doubt it's been the best painting experience I've had thus far. I can only imagine how it's changed my approach with minis at this stage, but the possibilities seem endless as I sit here having an over priced breakfast in my Paris hotel.

Sorry, no time for a write up this morning as travel is calling, but rest assured there will be a full report upon my return home this evening.

Oh, I spent 10 mins looking at my mini is morning and truly I cant believe I painted and only over a weekend. Thank you massive voodoo!

Finally I'm home (after driving for 6 hours and a further hour or so wait at the tunnel), unpacked and sorted ready for work tomorrow :(

Back to the painting reality of yesterday, we covered so much it's hard to know where to start. Being another full on day, starting at 9:30 and finishing around 20:00 there's enough room for plenty on the agenda. We covered such aspects of how to focus on the face, leather, true metallics, eyes, a simple technique for adding blended colour to a tip of something, glazing colour into skin to make it more interesting, blood and gore, weathering powders, final basing touches and so much more! Wow, it makes me tired just thinking about all those things.

Overall what can I say - get yourself onto one of these courses, you'll have a blast and you'll learn loads. Beautiful, thank you Massive Voodoo (Roman and Raffa both), Francois for organising and PK Pro (Felix) for sponsoring us. Buy stuff from PK Pro and Forged Monkey!!!
