    Hi Shades,

I'm sure you've seen these images before but just in case:

I love James' style. Apparently he trained as a watercolour artist and paints figs using adaptations of watercolour techniques.

  2. Thanks for the shout-out, James! I took a break over the holiday, but this past week I started working on the Skink Priest. I hope to finish it this weekend. It's been challenging to paint, since it has so many doo-dads on it. It's been difficult to balance out the colors. It's turned out a bit kaleidoscopic, and it draws heavily on the traditional colors that have been used to paint this particular piece. I wish I could have come up with something more original. A friend of mine asked if I had painted it albino. That would have been a great idea! Not just in terms of being a little more unique, but it would have made the color management easier, too. I'm still pleased with how it's turning out. And I've been able to experiment with some new techniques, relatively risk-free since the experiments are lost in the business of the model. I look forward to posting it. As a matter of fact, I'll probably go ahead and copy-and-paste much of this message, if you don't mind.

    Cheers, dude.

Thanks Shades, that was a very nice message you left for me. I just wish I could put the same effort into the "doing" of the hobby as I'm putting into the researching and the community aspects of it. The forum is a displacement activity that protects me from having to put my money where my mouth is.

Hopefully I'll get my paints out tonight and shake off some of those anxieties

Were you able to get that program on the Incas? It was you I had in mind when I posted it but wasn't sure if you'd be able to access it from non-UK-land.

WIP - Salamanders

by Shades on 01-04-2011 at 03:19 AM
This isn't quite the pattern I had in mind. I changed it because the pattern from the real-world reference really needed the whole body as a background, whereas the basilisk's center legs interfered with the pattern.

I think I might add some OSL around the eyes, varnish it gloss, finish the base, and be done with it.

WIP - Salamanders

Still have a ways to go, but they're coming along. I'll be painting over the one on the right with a black pattern of stripes and spots. I'm not sure about the one on the left. He's been getting leftover treatment so far.

In any case, it helps to post WIP photos, because I almost always see something different (or differently) in a photo than I do IRL.

WIP - Old Grenadier Lizardman, Part 2: Color Scheme Comparison

by Shades on 22-03-2011 at 02:46 AM
To help decide between color schemes, I figured I'd give each idea fair consideration and show each one side by side. Here's the one with lavender sea-weed -- a color choice purely made for color coordination and aesthetics. Please feel free to weigh in with your preference.

WIP - Old Grenadier Lizardman

I'm testing colors on this guy. I figure he's wearing a collar made of seaweed, so I'm testing out a green color. I can shade it to a darker green or a darker green-blue or towards a desaturated olive-drab.

On the other hand, if I go with a light lavender, I can maintain a more analogous color scheme. It just won't look like seaweed (unless it's "fantasy seaweed" ;-) ). I'm also thinking of switching the gold beads around the necklace to match the analogous color scheme as well
