6-Month Mountain Reduction and Painting Challenge - 6MMRPC

Rate this Entry
I have been almost obsessively prepping minis for the past couple of weeks, mainly Sedition Wars and some Malifaux. Maybe learning to airbrush primer and main basecoat, and being given a new airbrush, changed my approach. By September 1, I felt it was time to challenge myself, really push to paint as many models as possible by the end of 2014.

I mentioned it to Bloodthorn and he suggested I look into the 6-Month Mountain Reduction and Painting Challenge, as Chris' Miniature Woes and others have started. I am joining in with some lofty goals of my own. First, though, here are the rules, lifted almost verbatim...

September 1, 2014

1. No purchasing of new miniatures, EXCEPT if you use a joker card. Like in a deck of cards, you get two jokers to use on a figure purchase during the six months of the challenge. Could be a blister pack, an ebay bundle, or a single can't splurge.

2. Gifts do not count against you, e.g. Christmas, birthdays, etc. Also, if you're given gift cards by your hobby-illiterate family or friends, you can use them without penalty on anything you want, miniatures-wise. {Like Chris, I also luck out here with Christmas and my birthday during this 6 Months}

3. Paints, terrain (or materials), and other hobby supplies do not apply to the no purchasing rule.

4. At least one hobby related blog post and/or Instagram update a week. If you Instagram, be sure to hashtag your pic with #6MMRPC

5. Zombtober will be part of the 6 month challenge so, Zombie related stuff during October is ENCOURAGED!

More about the goals tomorrow!

    Great idea! I've been a part of similar things in the past and might again in the future, but for now all I'm doing is pledging to paint at least one miniature a month - so far 8 from 8 :)

    How would you be counting Kickstarter stuff? As while you might have paid for something before, a number of minis might turn up during the project. Alternatively, would buying stuff on KS during the project count as a Joker, or would that not count as the minis might not turn up until after the 6 months?

    Good questions, I was thinking about this sort of thing and Reaper's extended Bones II Kickstarter (pledge manager is still open) and their new one for CAV. I'd like to get in on these things, but even if I were not in this challenge, I don't really have the money for them right now.

    Just thinking it through, if I had paid for KS minis before Sept 1, I would consider them purchased or ordered prior to the start. If delivery occurs during the 6MMRPC, that's okay, IMHO. Since it's the transaction that counts, pledging, buying or otherwise ordering on KS would count as a Joker. Since the idea is not to 'splurge', I might suggest getting into a new KS with a bunch of miniatures should count as using both Jokers.

    Just my thoughts. I will probably revisit the topic and whine about it a little more if I get some more gaming materials sold on eBay.
