Fear not faithful followers (if there are any!) I have not abandoned the wraithlord project, and I bring you with no further ado the first part of the basing!

Now I liked the suggestiong Darklord made of having extra height on one side to add a bit more interest to the piece so I rolled some card up and taped it to the lid. Then I took a notecard and cut it into an isosceles trapezoid (that's a triangle with the pointy bit cut off) which i then made three slits into so it would bend when i tucked it into the already taped notecard and pulled.
I then added some sharp rocks to the 'bones' of my base. I didn't quite keep the configuration shown in the right hand photo but you get the idea!
The next step involved rolling the air drying clay I have (terracotta) and in sections applying it to the bones making sure rocks stuck through where I wanted them. I also snapped some tiles I had to make a rough road outline, making some dimples to fill with water later. Gravel was added at this point too to press into the wet clay.
A spare marine bike i had with moving wheels was used to make tyre tracks and the swept around tracks.

Things to do:
LOTS.
- Add in the moss kindly given to me by Boris
- More covering scree/gravel/stones
- brown ink the road and build it up in alternating layers of ink, gravel and possibly PVA dependign how wet i want to to look.
- Fill in water filled holes
- place bike and wedge in with either pins or clay or both.
- stick chips of gravel very carefully on their edges so they look like they're flying away from the model.
- Work out a way to do this and pass all my assignments/coursework/teaching/observations and keep up with my housework!
I also need to finish painting the wraitlord!
WT out.

For fine texture you could consider pumice paste or for sandy texture I often use bicarb which, although often used for snow effects, gives a lovely dusty finish.
