here is some info on Arena Deathmatch :

Arena DeathMatch: The game of miniatures combat in fantasy arenas.

Avatars of War: Arena DeathMatch is a 28mm miniatures game that depicts the bloody clash between two or more bands of heroes facing off on the floor of the arena, in front of a raucous crowd that is thirsty for action, violence and death. This deadly contest is known as a deathmatch.

The most powerful heroes among the mortal races are known as the Avatars of War—heroes chosen by the Gods of War themselves. These Avatars, in addition to being fierce combatants, are able to draw upon the silver of divinity within their souls for the power to expand their already awesome combat abilities.

In Arena DeathMatch, each player controls a band of Avatars of War as they face off on the arena
floor in front of a cheering (or jeering) crowd.

The perils of the Arena stand against you: traps, hazards and even savage beasts stand between you and your opponent. The door to the Arena opens, and the shouting crowd is eager to see their favourite heroes fight to the death. Will they be cheering your victory... or your death? There’s only one way to find out!

Arena DeathMatch games are played to a number of points which state the the size of the game: that is, the total amount of gold coins (gc) that each player can spend to recruit and train his Avatars of War. For example you can play a 750 gc deathmatch, a 800 gc deathmatch, ...

Commonly, each player will recruit between four and seven Avatars of War for his band. Recruiting and training your Avatars of War is an important part of Arena DeathMatch. You should now spend some time reading the rules for each Avatar of War in the rulebook and considering the possibilities and combinations available. The Arena DeathMatch band maker is a perfect tool to experiment different options for your band.

You can choose the Avatars of War that better fit your gaming style, for example, a ranged combat based band, or a close combat based one, or even a band full of spellcasters! You can also choose your Avatars of War simply based on the look of their miniatures. It is up to you!

New material is created monthly to enrich the game: new Avatars of War to join your band, beasts and ultra supporter groups, more scenery elements to spice up your arena, and new scenarios. These are just some of the things that take Arena DeathMatch beyond its rulebook

Welcome, Ignasi! Great to see the company take close attention.

I'm currently working on mine. I'm afraid it won't be anything fancy, like a whole arena, although that would have been great but I'm just concentrating on trying to actually finish a mini.

Darklord

im going for the Beastman Lord - though i am sorely tempted to spend some more money!!

I thought that I owned some aow stuff, but sadly no.
Would have been a push anyway with entries to do for the ladder, wamp monthly and TT on Wyrd!

Good luck everyone!

Are we still OK to do the whole component swapping thing like with the Gamezone competition (not that I actually managed to submit anything for it)? I was planning on doing a weapon and shield swap on my entry.

Darklord
21-04-2009, 03:35 PM
yes thats fine - as long as its still obviously AoW and the swapped bits are subtle in their origins

Well, as everyone else is saying which one they're painting, I'm painting the barbarian. I also have the Orc Warlord but I had a clearer idea of what I wanted for the barbarian and his base.

If I ever, ever, make it to your country and find a voodoo doll of me with a big knife in it's gut..... Not even the dark powers of the Haitian art of zuvembification will save you!

I want to get a couple done. I will for sure be doing the Goblin King (defo. NOT grom the paunch.... it's the goblin king!) and the black orc looking warboss. I can't paint until my medication is done though. Gives me the dizzyness and some shakes. Hoping it's the medication and not permanent nerve damage (knock on wood!).

I still need to greenstuff mine and figure out a base. I'm almost done with my Ladder mini so when thats finished, I'm onto this. Any suggestions on the base for the Beserking Dwarf? He's standing on an orks head, so I have to try and think about that... I kinda want to do a dungean looking base versus an outdoor thing.... hmmm... I may try and use a Wyrd sewer insert or something and do it in a forge/multen lava kinda look, IDK, I'm drawing a base blank...

Darklord
28-04-2009, 06:52 PM
pete im in the same boat - i have no idea on the base at all, my custom base is actually a plinth more. think i will get the mini started so i can focus on him. I begun 6 new projects yesterday so the mind has been multi tasking. Think i shall try and improve on the gamezone base i did

First of all... Hi everyone as i am new to this forum :)

I just hopped over from the arena deathmatch forum when reading the infos about an avatars competition. Thats a real good opportunity to motivate myself to work again on my avatars band. So i am trying to participate. At the moment i have the chaos dwarf on my working table. If i find enough time i might be able to finish a second miniature before the deadline. But still dont know which mini i will paint after the dwarf is finished...
I wish everyone happy painting :)

Ive got my dark elf undercoated and ready for paint. I lost a piece though so i need to get a replacement sent out. I just cant decide on a colour scheme for him. I hate all the black colour schemes people have been giving him so i might just go for what i know how to do best, red and gold. What do people think of red and gold for the dark elf? Will it work? Would some kind of blue colour scheme work better (the other colour im thinking about)?

Schlunz
04-05-2009, 01:03 PM
I painted my dark elf prince some weeks ago and used a red/purple/silver combination with a green coat. Imho red or blue works very well for a dark elf. Here is a (not so good) pic of my elf, maybe it helps you to get an imagination of how red color works on him.

Cool, looks like you've got a collection of AoW stuff Schlunz!

I made very good progress on my Goblin King mini today. Should be done tomorrow or maybe early Wed. I am waiting for a Dragon model to soak in Simple Green to try and knock off by the weekend as well. Feels very good to be able to paint again!

Schlunz
05-05-2009, 07:25 AM
Nice to hear you re able to paint again and i am already very curious to see your goblin king as i really like that model.
And also for a dragon. I love dragons but never ever painted one. I always wanted to but all the draogon models i liked came at a pretty high price (like the oracle dragon i.e. :? ).
Yes i have a collection of AoW minis as i am playing the game but until now there was only the playing arena, the necromancer and dark elf painted.
Unfortunately this will also be the reason why my contest entries will not get a special base because i want to use the minis for gaming purposes later on, so they should fit to the sandy floor of the arena.
I am nearly done with the chaos dwarf, just not been able to take any good pics... did i mention i hate this photography thing :x ?
Now started my goblin avatar.

Nice paintjob, i would try and get individual photo shots for each of your minis, just stick a bit of plain paper behind each one to give it a better background, but seriously i hate taking photos too ;) if you've seen some of my dire pictures you'll think yours aren't too bad. Anyway it's good to get more people joining in the fun :D. I'd love to see your whole collection of AoW minis all painted up, plus would be awesome in the arena !

Yeah, no problem - might have a spare Chaos Lord too, depends whether I need a helmet (ie f*ck'd up his face) or shield (ie f*cked up his armour) after the comp finishes

It's all sold, if you like! I do like painting the AoW stuff, and it seems to move on eBay which works well for me. I think I'm gonna put a little more effort into that side of painting coming up.

Fair enough, we'll see what the crack is after the comp? (at least I'll be sober!)
Ebay, is a fair comment - I really need to start painting 15mm DBA's up again

Thanks for the offers but the only mini \I really like from AoW is the Dark Elf Queen. TBH I couldn't get any enthusiasm for painting any of the other minis.

RogerB

Oh well, only a few days left and way too much to do on the mini, as well as my eyes are tired and won't focus properly for long today. I tried but didn't give myself enough time to get this done for the competition deadline. I guess I should have started work on it instead of doing a bit of work on the Grey Knights after my trip. The plan now is to finish it as well as the GKs before the next PB meeting.

I don't think I'm going to be able to do the Westwind one, either as that would just end up with me leaving the other stuff again and I really want to get them finished.

been out of action most of the day with bad head - hoping to get the horns done today then initial painting is done. need to go back and touch up a fair bit - i think my eyesight's been out with this bad head and its shown in places. still havent started the base yet. got a pack of goodies last week from anatecoltis workshop so will try some water effects and stuff on this base

Hi,

News, news from Avatars of War !!!!

War Priest !

The War Priest set is available. The pic shows only two of the several different options, allowing putting together different minis by choosing from optional weapons, heads, and cloak.

This model has been sculpted by Felix Paniagua with conceptual help from Des Hanley.

You could send me the pics before you submit them and I can see what I can do or if I have any advice. I'm still learning myself.

If it's a square plinth you were going to use you could make one out of plasticard, unless you were going for the wood plinth look.

I'd have to say WAMP'ers, I'm a little dissapointed in the turnout so far. The entries that are in are very nice, but most of them are from newbies that joined just for the contest! These contests are announced so far ahead that you really should be able to order something and get if finished in ample time. I understand that things happen and life flares up on ya, but cmon folks... I hope to see some late entries from you regular guys and gals.

Brett (and others?) has gone to a lot of work getting these sponsors and setting this up. It's unfortunate if we can't support them in return and keep these going. Check the calendar, order one or two contest ahead of time, so you have a mini waiting for you, Not you waiting on your order for 2 of the 4 weeks between contests.

I've been waiting on my Westwind order for over a week and a half now, so plan ahead. I don't mean to get all preachy, but I think it needed to be said so I'll step up and be "that guy".

RogerB
15-05-2009, 07:14 PM
I did order my AoW stuff before my trip to London but the shop I bought them from had run out of stock and I didn't get them until the end of the trip. yes I did waste a week working on the Grey Knights but I'm not sure it would have helped. I'm to slow at the moment and my health sometimes gets in the way. I'm not going to aplogise for that.

NeatPete
15-05-2009, 07:21 PM
I don't want any appologies, and prob. shouldn't have said anything at all. I hope noboby takes it personal or to seriously. This is all about fun in the hobby and thats all it should be. I guess I'd just like to see more support for the WAMP specials from its root members. But I'm just one person that joined the boards 5 months ago, so who am I to say anything...

I think that's part of the problem. Most of the "newbies" that join up for the competition do the same thing on lots of sites and seem to be very, very good. It kind of makes you think "why bother" when one of them submits a piece that you know is way better than you can do. I'm not pointing any fingers and I realise that if we limited it to forum regs then we wouldn't get much exposure but it can be a bit frustrating.

RogerB
15-05-2009, 07:35 PM
No offence taken, just explaining my situation. I probably won't have time for the Westwind one either, despite already having the mini, but we'll see. All that after I personally thanked the Westwing folks in person for sponsoring the comp. I just need to get something finished, it's become the overiding thing for me at the moment.

lizcam
15-05-2009, 07:41 PM
My lack of entry was not a "why bother" issue. It was a "My ex is an ass and now I have to move" issue. I'll be lucky to get my ladder challenge with Ubie finished.

Pyro Stick
15-05-2009, 07:48 PM
I would have entered but even if i had painted up my dark elf (which wouldnt even have been half as good as some of the stuff ive seen on this site) its still missing a piece which i was hoping would have arrived by now. I actually did start painting up the dark elf i was going to enter last night. It took me a hell of a long time to think of a colour scheme i was happy with and i still dont know what colour im going to do his cloak. Im taking part in a 6 hour painting marathon tomorrow so i might just be able to get an entry in on time if the piece its missing comes in the mail tomorrow.

Vern
15-05-2009, 08:09 PM
I kind of agree with Pete - I do plan on entering least two entries for all the comps (apart from Ultraforge, that'll be one ), that way I'm guaranteed of finishing at least one.

This time, however, a bit of real life has intervened, and can't see myself finishing by Monday morn, probably still try, but the figure is to nice to rush it (& I can't strip it - to many unpainted figures for that!)

"why bother" when one of them submits a piece that you know is way better than you can do

Have to say, it doesn't bother me, coz I don't expect to win - I'm just enjoying painting again (admittedly slowly) - For that reason, I'm really looking forward to the Pegaso comp, for the challenge & to see the other entries :D

NeatPete
15-05-2009, 08:09 PM

Great point!
Maybe we could discuss things to change this. IDK , maybe random participation prizes, commenting prizes, block the galleries until the contest date etc. Maybe spread the prizes over participation versus just the top three. That may encourage particiaption without drawing in so many ringers? Just some thoughts from me... It's a good point. I enter a few comps but aren't really 'good enough' to ever win anything either. (yet :) )

And I'll admit right now I don't think I'll enter the Ultraforge contest coming up so I've been rather hypocritical with my comments today...

RogerB
15-05-2009, 08:12 PM
I'll probably aim for the comps later in the year and hope the ones more recently will sponsor another comp. I was looking forward to the AoW and Westwind ones. The Ultraforge one was always going to be a push for me. I needed to know if I could just get something smaller finished in a set time, which I haven't yet, although the barbarian has gone quicker and involved much less dettol than the one I'm doing for Liz.

The thing about the prizes is that's what's decided by the sponsors.

Undave
15-05-2009, 09:03 PM
I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing that we're getting such good quality entries, it's just a shame that some people join WaMP just to win the competitions with no intention of contributing to the rest of the site. I mean sometimes you have to ask yourself wether that person would do a tutorial to help improve the standard of the rest of the painters on the site or is it a case of "I've got my prize, screw you guys I'm going home." I kind of view the special competitions as outsider affairs rather than the monthly and the ladder which are local competitions for local people :laugh

NeatPete
15-05-2009, 09:03 PM
I bet Brett could turn on some of that charm and negotiate other prizing structures with the sponsers if he thought it would be better. I can't imagine a manufacturer would really care how the prizes got diveded up, especially if might increase participation. They wouldn't have to give more prizes, just the same amounts distributed differently. They know not everyone is A+ class painter.

arctica
15-05-2009, 09:09 PM
Actually i agree with Pete, but i might not seem very active but i check these forums daily and in many respects it does help the forum itself gain more members and you never know they might stick around too.
I think the best example of that thus far is Schlunz, he joined because he saw the comp but im so impressed with alot of his work, he asks for comments and listens and involves himself in good discussions. Obviously that is just one example and this is a new forum, but maybe we can help influence him and others to look at other model manufacturers, and everyone here is friendly enough but it's always hard to involve yourself into a conversation as such when people have "in-group" jokes etc and their own little cliches.

Well just my two cents to add.

Vern
15-05-2009, 09:27 PM
I can I can't?!

Although the voting structure on the comps is very fluid, and if you see 4 excellent Space Marines (for example) you might give them all the same score, (or lower if you've just been voting on CMON ) but one that stands out, you give the higher mark - take Wag's Treasure Island (which he's deservedly winning)

ScottRadom
16-05-2009, 01:44 AM
Meh, everyone has great points. I enjoy the challenge of the comps. I am really hoping to place one day. I think a participation prize could be slick, maybe drawn from a pool every three months from the active member who've participated over the last three months-ish?

But, I don't think the system is broken. I would love nothing more then to see the WAMP board become flooded with A+ talent that I can steal thoughts and dreams from.

I am going to make a genuine effort to enter every single contest we have. Even possibly at the expense of the WAMP ladder. I am going to finish my GameZone entry and show everyone the awesomesness of it.

But good points all!

Other ideas for painting challenges. Maybe a "team" effort where people get together as a team and each paint up something and the team wins or loses? Shake it up some and really get people having fun slinging paint? Or maybe a pairs comp (I call dibs on Ritual!) or something like that?

I'm enjoying things as is, but I could always enjoy things a little more.

ScottRadom
16-05-2009, 01:47 AM
Also I submitted my montageified entry pic. Thanks to NathanR for the montageness and to all for the tips in what I think improved the fig. I now have a list of stock answers to improving my figs......

Darklord- Wash it with purple, highlight with space wolves grey, use Devlan Mud.

Ritual-Use VMC Vallejo Black Red to shade the flesh.

Everyone- More shading, more contrast, do your metals better!

Lovin' the advice! this is the first time I think I actually went BACK and fixed a mini instead of just going on to the next one and trying to do better on that. Very satisfied with my end result. This is going to be a tough contest! I think I am the poor man in the Goblin pool!

Supervike- Vote for Radom and your wildest dreams will come true!

Darklord
16-05-2009, 11:59 AM
well from my point of view the contests are working.
i set these up with two aimes: to get new members and raise awareness of wamp but also to get members painting more. i feel we have achieved both of these things. i know there is concern about super painters coming along grabbing a prize then running of into the distance, never to be seen again but has that actually happenned? to my lnowledge everyone that has won a prize has posted to the site since, most prizes have been won by people that didnt join the site for that contest. look at the first one we ran the wyrd contest. we got a few new members on the back of that - hinton, arctica, neatpete to name a few (i think!) came over from the publicity of that and they have become stalwarts of the site.
we also need to look at these contest from wamps and the manufacturers side of things. As i said previously one of the aims of these contest from my point of view is to increase membership and awareness, without members joining the site would die a slow death (it nearly did a year or 2 back when we had maybe 4 active members at one point). No we are never going to be a big site like cmon but thats part of this sites appeal - its about painters helping each other to improve and i really feel it does. there is no elitism here, sure we have some world class painters on here - ritual, automaton, Nigel for example but most of us are average. I think most of us have improved a little due to this site. but that leads me to the next point.
Look at it from the manufacturers point of view: why did they sponsor us? times are hard mini companies are struggling so why sponsor a contest? for publicity and to increase sales and this is why having super painters doing hit and runs wouldnt bother me. fantastic entries show sponosrs the kind of high class we can attract here (and shows other people too) and this is good for us and them, after all the better the entries the better their minis look, the better they sell!
most prizes so far have been won by longer term members and will continue to do so.
Lets put this in context: we have less than 100 members - we are (if you exclude the ebay time) about 6 months old yet we managed to get 10 companies to sponsor us - good companies too - Avatars of War, Ultraforge, Gamezone, Armorcast to name a few are big well known names in this hobby. and they are putting up some bloody good prizes . Avatars of war are putting up about £150 worth pf prizes - Ultraforge offering a £80 dragon - Pegaso over £100 odd quid of prizes. These are great prizes and im over the moon we got them. These are prizes that are hard to win for a reason. I dont believe there is anyone on this forum that cannot win a prize in one of these contests. another reason why better painters help. if the standard is higher it should push others to raise theie standard which is what we want in the end. if you knew only me and ian were entering would you try as hard? probably not and thus your standard would be lower.
by the way the decision on prizes is partly mine partly the sponsors - sometimes they ask me to suggest sometimes they offer whats in their mind.

Dont forget all these contest and the ladder and monthly ones are there for those that want to enter them - i dont keep count of who enters what and it wouldnt bother me if someone never entered any contest. You may not feel like painting a pegaso sculpt but you may love westwind stuff. Sure i would like each contest to have 50 entries but it doesnt work like that how many entries do cmon get on theirs compared with membership numbers?
i do put up contests as soon as i have confirmed them so you know whats happening in November, i did this to give people the maximum amount of time to prepare if they wanted too. bear in mind that we dont push contests elsewhere until it is their turn, this in effect gives wamp members a head start over others.i order my stuff 2 months in advance now, so i have it ready and i could start it when i liked even if its weeks away
At the end of the day guys enjoy them, if any take your fancy and your able too then join in, if you cant then no need to justify yourself.
at the end of the day we will know if they have been a sucess or not by what the sponsors say when i ask them to help us with another one!

Vern
16-05-2009, 02:04 PM

Alright, I'm officially ticked off at CMON. I placed an order for a Necromance nearly 5 weeks ago and as of today, 2 days from the contest end date, its still not here.

Apparently I'll be waiting until the Urban Mammoth competition comes up. At least I've already got some of their models.

I'm so sorry about that AGP. That's one of the most frustrating thing about this hobby. It's not like you can pop around the corner and get what you need. You have to rely on a third party and the post to get things to you in a timely manner. Then if they don't you and up with minis that you may have little use for (although a mini gained is never a waste).

I'm glad you have the urban mammoth one. Check out some of the other comps and see if you're interested and then grab a mini or two for them as well. Then you won't have to worry about it later.

I'm new at this forum, I've heard about it only becouse of the painting contest on Coolminiornot.

i posted my work after the deadline, sorry for that I finished it earlier today but only now I had internet connection.

I really love the models, created by Avatars of War, I hope my work is good enought to please the miniatures sculptors and i hope they like it!

Even if I will not be able to take part in the contest it was worth to paint that model.

welcome along Lan.

Unforunatley your entry was too late to be considered. The deadline was midnight but your entry was posted 2 hours 20 minutes after this which is too long to 'let pass'.

I am sorry about this but we do need to be fair for everyone here and an extra 2 hours for other people may have meant they could enter after all .
i hope you understand. as such your entry was placed in the WIP section so you can still get some feedback on this

lots of great entries in there guys, well done to you all, im glad im not judging this!

Vikey do your thing.

dont forget everyone to go have a look at the entries and leave some comments. i know the painters would appreciate feedback.
