View Full Version : Donga's Money Grubbing Challenge!

Well I'm jumping onto this band wagon! Picked my mini, 40mm Triel from Hasslefree. Got her from Salute a couple of years ago for 8, out of my 10 kitty, 2 left. I had a sample base off Ian/BNSminiatures, it was a 'techno' plinth base, which I adjusted (ahem).

My final aim is to pay off my folks who lent me the money to get my car. The final figure (more in hope than expectation) is 1000. I'm giving myself a year to hit that figure, so plenty of time.

Anyway the figure ;)

I made a bit of a tactical error, I painted her in true metalics. Fine, but they are a bugger to photograph and still look naff in these pictures!!!

Anyway, I'll be listing her over this weekends 'free listing' weekend ;)

Post a link when she's up...

Good effort sir. Keep the tally going as things progress.

Cheers Scott, first stab at your skin formula. Although I dont have VMC Mahogany Earth, I have VGC Tan. It's near enough as damn it the same colour!!!

Mental note, in future borrow my dad's DSLR/industrial tripod for taking mini pics. It does a much better job!

I tried his skin formula on Lara Croft too though I had to improvise and make my own mega mix (used silver grey though)

17-06-2011, 05:55 PM
(in hushed tones)

I used my own shade mix that worked well, tan & VMC Field Blue. Worked a treat :)

Right, auction still live, no bids but a big bucket of watchers ;) It would be bad if you lot are watching this and it's not 'proper' bidders ha ha!

Anyway, the plan (long term). I'm going to take the money from this auction (if it sells...) and invest in a larger scale pegaso model. Got that lined up ready to go, details to follow. Paint that and hopefully get more money for that one (hopefully). Then trade up to a bigger more impressive model, paint & sell... and so on. Once I hit the 100 or so mark in the kitty, I'm going to buy a 40k army and paint that. The most money I've made from ebay was for painted armies. The last one I sold paid for the computer I'm typing this on, paid for the car to be fixed AND some toy soldier money!!!

I'm researching on one of the wargaming sites what a compact/effective 'tournament ready' army to choose. I have some ideas of armies that I can buy cheaply, paint quickly and sell for maximum money. It also has to look good!

That's the plan anyway...

good plan mate - I thought the army route but I aint good at painting large amounts.

as for watcher numbers - I get around the 40ish mark on a good day - doesnt seem to make too much difference to price but you only need 2 people to love it and your ok

25-06-2011, 04:36 PM

It all just depends on the army, going for an easy to paint one with few -ish models...

In theory anyway!

Always happens to me Darklord. I never seem to have a miniature finished to coincide with a free listing weekend. The problem is that Ebay only tell you it's going to happen when you are right on top of the weekend.

Well that was a washout!

After painting the mini, putting on ebay, selling it, taking off the fees. My grand total for this endevour is....

10.40, made 0.40p :(

LONG way to go. Need to find something to paint that'll make money!

Sorry to hear the first mini didn't go so well. Hope the next one really hits the home run!

I find that the miniatures that sell the best on ebay are still Games Workshop miniatures even if they aren't always the most inspiring models.

Try going for something cheap and cheerful and fairly new-ish. Maybe the mage, warlord, warlock or Griffin Rider from Island of Blood or the Captain, Ork Warlord or Dreadnought from Black Reach.

There are folks selling these fairly cheap on Ebay.

Even if you don't go for a mini from one of the boxed sets, Character models seem to do better than a small squad for example.

Hope that helps

Good luck

GW is your best bet - current stuff and spaz marines. Another thing is rather than starting at 9.99 start at 0.99 yeah its a gamble on losing money but the lower the price the more folks likely to bid - once bidding people get addicted and will pay more just to outbid someone else

Right... The update. I've just got hold of the HE Griffon rider for 6, delivered!!! Bargain!

So new total, 10.40 - 6 = 4.40 in kitty.

This bugger should sell + i'm going to pimp him on CMON this time.

Things can only get better ;)

02-07-2011, 03:06 PM
just the rider? what about the griffon

02-07-2011, 03:47 PM
Hope so Donga, good luck with it.

Cool and if you get bored with the large scale you can always flog it to me  Look forward to seeing it painted.

Best of luck on this one.

I would imagine gaming stuff will sell best unless your are a really really good painter.

just the rider? what about the griffon

Pedantic bugger!

@Everyone else: Thanks! Weather is too nice for being indoors painting though!

Challenge suspended, just had a large commission land on my doormat. Zero expenditure (well nearly) - max payment :)

Don't know if I should add it to the total?
