View Full Version : Scott Radom's Paint for Profit challange... Dolla Billz Yo!

30-04-2011, 04:50 PM
Okay, so we got the rough outline of the comp, start with a small amount of money and aim for big things! I am going to use either the value of what I actually bought the mini's for, or roughly the suggested retail value of min's I've forgotten about. Also I am doing some thinking. I've got some mini's I've won as prizes and stuff. I don't think I want to assign a value of zero to them, so I might go for 1/2 retail value on that stuff, or the stuff I've traded for. I think that looks to be more in the spirit of things. Or so I think.

So... I am gonna start off with a pool of 10$. Since the CDN and US dollars are near par (Actually the mighty loony is ahead of the greenback recently. Suck it America!) I won't bother differentiating between the two. I am not gonna put any dollar value on basing materials, unless I use a manufactured one. I don't really have a goal but I would like ot hit 500$ before September 15th. I am going to Munich for Oktoberfest this year to get super drunk and it'd be awesome to spend a night or two reaping the booze fueled rewards from my hobby.

I also want to take part in as many of the WAMP contests as possible. This means I am going to paint up a couple of quickies and sell them to hopefully make enough to use one of my Bane Legions mini's for this contest. So at 9 GBP for either of the mini's I want to use I need to have about 14.25$ in my pool soon-ish.

So... to start I am going to paint up a couple SMALL mini's. After painting the enormous AoW Ogre for the april contest I need something small to work on. So I'll paint up a Hasslefree Chaos Dwarf on a 25mm base aimed at Warhammer players. In my experience on eBay I have had the most success for sure at game based mini's. Warhammer is an easy thing to sell for, and I think alternative mini's like AoW and such sell well as they're different than the bulk of GW buyers typically see. So I think a Chaos Dwarf based and painted appropriately for an army will help me get my ball rolling.

So the cost of the mini I am going to start with works out to around $6.50. So that leaves me with $3.50 to roll over. I think I will likely bang out another similarly themed Hasslefree Chaos Dwarf just to make sure if either auction doesn't sell or something that I will have enough to "pay" for my Bane Legions mini.

Stuff I need to bear in mind for this contest.....

-eBay and PayPal fees! I never really seem to consider these, and they're significant! I want this challenge to accurately show what selling on eBay actually costs.
-Packing Materials! I use trading card boxes for shipping and they cost me around 50 cents each. Not free! I recycle packing where I can, but often I get stuff in ENORMOUS packages for such a small amount of stuff.
-CMON credits! If you buy 20 credits to list your auctions on CMON it costs 15$. So that's 75 cents each. I've found the number of hits an auction gets while listing on CMON for me is nearly triple. That's significant, and I intend on listing my entries over there. I still put almost all my painted stuff over on CMON still, so this isn't any kind of a hardship for me.

So never mind eBay fee's but between the boxes I use and the CMON credits each auction will cost an extra 1.25$. I can live with that, but it sure needs to be tracked!

So... off to start some base work for my first mini's then off to whack some golf balls around.

02-05-2011, 04:34 AM
Okay, done the first project...
I'll put another linky up in the right spot for people to rag onthe mini if they like. It was painted pretty quickly and I practiced some stuff I need to keep practicing on for sure! So....

The mini worked out to be around 6.50$, and that's probably taking into account postage as I am rounding up quite a bit. After paying for the CMON auction credit and my shipping box (For 1.25$) that leaves me with 2.25$ in my pool which I can put towards my next mini. Assuming it sells on eBay! I normally in the past have started my auctions at 99 cents and let them go where they may. I am thinking though for this contest since money is the goal and this early on I could not absorb the loss on the mini if it went for a min. bid I should set a minimum of 19.99$ plus my usual 8$ worldwide shipping. I need to make sure I can still play along in this contest!

Assuming that works then I might follow NeatePete's idear of posting multiple auctions with some similarily themed pieces. I think that's a good idear, and I know it's a trap I always fall into. Anyway to metally reduce the shipping cost by spreading it over many mini's! So I'll post this mini to CMON and start the listing for this Thursday as DL suggested long ago. Doing a 10 day auction starting on a thursday gives you two weekends for people to look at the mini and end it ona sunday, which is supposed to be the best day to end the auctions.

02-05-2011, 09:23 AM
Sounds like a good plan.

02-05-2011, 10:22 AM
quick work mate your plan sounds good. Let me know the ebay numbers and Ill pop them on the front page widget (same goes for everyone else taking part)

03-05-2011, 02:36 AM
get em Radom!

03-05-2011, 10:27 PM
Nice job! I think this a good choice, what with FW doing a chaos dwarf range

03-05-2011, 10:31 PM
Great figure Scott...Jealous of how quick and effective you got the job done!

06-05-2011, 02:08 AM
Allrighty... he's up on eBay right now!

TY DL and Inchigh!

no worries mate - Im going to add peoples auctions onto the ebay widget on the front page just let me know the item number.

06-05-2011, 01:55 PM
It is....

thanks man! I'mm off work all next week so I hope to get a lot of painting done. Then I am getting hammered on the weekends! This weekend for my Birthday and next going on a road trip with some peeps to go see Rammstein. Should be fun!

09-05-2011, 04:03 AM

This was painted pretty quick. Maybe three hours. I don't really like him, 'cause I went for generic brown robes on him to maximize potential buyers and not painting him up to follow a specific chaos god. Pretty boring looking in the end. Ah well, we'll see if it sells, but next time I will make sure that just 'cause I am painting for eBay I still gotta keep pushing my skills and trying to make each mini look as nice as I think I can. Again, we'll see if it sells. My first auction isn't over yet so I can't "buy" this mini from my pool to sell him yet. I just went to look and see what this mini cost, but it's not available on the Hasslefree site anymore as far as I can tell. I think it was 3gbp's or so... so like $5 or so. I gotta wait to see if the first mini sells though.

10-05-2011, 06:25 PM
Allrighty, I am trying to get some mini's lined up for multiple auctions if possible. This little guy came as one of three mini's for 10$....

I really liked painting him. We'll see if he goes. I'll spam this mini into the appropriate thread to ask for painting crit's on the dude. It was about 7 1/2 hrs from blister to ready to take pic's of. I am trying to log my time for this painting challenge to get a more accurate picture of what the return actually is selling these mini's. Not that it really matters, I just want to satisfy my curiosity. So... call this guy $3.50 for the mini and hopefully i can list him next week with the other Hasslefree Chaos Dwarf I have.

10-05-2011, 08:38 PM
nice little beggars - these on sale yet? dont forget those ebay numbers dude

10-05-2011, 09:20 PM
Nope, I don't have the money in my pot to list them until my first one sells.

11-05-2011, 11:19 PM
I did up one of the Ratnik post apoc guys. I really liked painting it! Super, super rough sculpt, and I see I missed at least one mould line too. Nice. Still, very fun too paint. I could do a bunch more of them, and I think I will.

16-05-2011, 02:27 AM
Epic failure!

My dwarf of Nurgle did not sell. Yikes! He was listed for 20 bucks, had 10 watchers near the end and several questions I got from prospective buyers which all got answered positively but still no sale. So I had around 3$ left in the pot, and I am relisting him and using another 75 cent auction credit from CMON to help get him back out there. That leaves me with around 2 bucks in the pot. However, I don't want to waste too much more time so I am breaking the rules of the comp and spending from my budget more than I have. I am listing another Chaos Dwarf I painted in a rather bland scheme to be used as a sorcerer in warhammer as well. My thought is maybe someone might pick up both of them and save on shipping. Maybe? I also listed both at 99 cents, so hopefully they do sell. So... adding in the cost of the mini and the CMON credit I am at about 3$ in the hole. OUCH! TOTAL FAILURE!!!!

I had one mini not sell, but that was a while ago. I was pretty confident this one was gonna go, but maybe I overestimated his value at 20$. Sometimes it's good to get the rug pulled out form under your feet and get back to reality. I have officially been served a cold slice of humble pie and had to pay the reality cheque to boot. Fair 'nuff!

So what's my lesson here? Dunno yet, we'll see how these two mini's do on auction this week but here's what I suspect....

I am more pleased with the Nurgley axe dude than I am with the wizard dude (He's just pretty boring looking with that brown robe). I don't think either is painted poorly, but both were defo quick pieces of work I did with this project and eBay in mind. Kind of watching the clock and thinking of how my work would pay on a per hour basis. I did enjoy the painting so nothing lost there but I sure didn't push myself at all on either mini. So I think my lesson here is that for me to have success on eBay selling mini's if I am going to draw customers to my work even at what I thought was a modest price tag of 20 bucks (28 after shipping) I need to be selling my best work that I have put my best effort into. Or so I think now. Hopefully it was just a bum week for me and the little dudes can bring in around 10-15$ each this week.

Thats unfortunate, and im surprised it didnt sell. Hope ya get better luck next time round

16-05-2011, 07:24 PM
Put "Pro Painted" in the title and claim you've won like 5 demons and that you learned how to paint from Neatpete.

You'll be a millionare in no time!

16-05-2011, 08:30 PM
Lol you mischieviously forgot to mention the 35% royalty for that reference

Fantastic rate you're churning through models there, Scott! Would have thought it would sell, but maybe Chaos Dwarfs aren't mainstream exactly. The one that could be used for sorcerer is probably easier. Is the basing work really included in your 3 hour work? Man. That's quick. I am just about to challenge KittenCeleste to a speed-duel of 5 hours, excluding prepping and base making. We'll see if we can pull it off...

Ok, nuff rambling. Just wanted to give you a comment on the goblin captain, that one is just uber-cool

17-05-2011, 04:34 AM
Yeah the basework is for sure included in that time. Now I am NOT talking about 3 consecutive hours, I let the milliput and stuff dry overnight. If you look at my bases they are pretty damn repetitive. I like 'em, but I can do them on auto pilot. Pick out a hirst block... glue it down. Get the milliput, smooth it out. Let it dry, then add the texture. All the leaves and crap I add after painting and it's maybe 5 minutes tops. Those silfor tufts take the work out of everything (as designed! Awesome products fromthat company!). Painting that 3hr mini included a lot of humming and hawing over paint scheme. It's a tiny mini, and there's very few elements to it. Actually just two. Robes, and armour. Simplest mini I have litereally ever painted. Not a weapon, not any pouches or anything. If I had to do it again as pictured I would think I could do it in 2 hours flat.

But that's sort of where I am enjoying learning about how this painting for a profit thingy is working. I had one idea that churning out a ton of stuff without having to think much about how I was painting so long as it was at a decent table level would result in the best rate of profit for my work. So far evidence has not backed me up. We'll see! Still enjoying what I am doing, and what I am working on. For sure I am going to keep putting out a few quick pieces every now and then as a break during and in between bigger projects. I do enjoy them.

17-05-2011, 09:31 AM
tough luck on the no sale mate - it happens. One thing to bear i mind is that game legal sales generally do best. Not many people would buy half a unit of orks, they want something thats usable straight away. Obviously character models are fine on their own but I would try and do rank and file ones in units together. You have skills mate so i would aim for the character models if you can. Sure they take longer but the can potentially bring more coin in for you. Sure you could paint 10 of these quick fire ones but if they only bring 5 bucks each it isn't much when you can achieve that with one figure. Also those willing to pay for the character models are more likely to want commission work or look for more work from you.
Sure pop in the splash n dash models to keep things churning over but I would also be using your skills to their potential mate. Theres tons of average painted minis on ebay, not so many well painted - and guess which sells better?

23-05-2011, 06:22 PM
Fair point DL! In fact I sold my AoW entry for $90ish bucks which I thought was decent. Sovs. what the rushed out mini's sold for I can for sure see your point. Makes sense to me!

So, both Chaos Dwarf mini's sold this time around. The nurgley one for $12.50 and the Sourcerror dude went for $9.40. It's a beginning! So that's 21.90, less 10% eBay fee's (I think it might be 9%, but I am too lazy to check) means that the grand total is 19.71$ SO less the 3$ I was in the hole I'll call it a total of 16.50$ for the good guys. Hooray!

23-05-2011, 06:39 PM
positive figures buddy, you are your way.

24-05-2011, 10:11 AM
Well done Scott, the ball has started rolling.

24-05-2011, 01:59 PM
:goodjob: Nicely done. May they keep on rollin'

25-05-2011, 05:56 AM
TY gang. So I am gonna list my Grot General on thursday for ten days. I am gonna try for a starting price of 19.99$ this time even though my Chaos Dwarf stuff didn't go at that price. Why? I think 40K stuff, and especially Ork stuff always has a broader audience and I don't thin kyou se too many of these 40K character pieces out there. Last time I listed a simple assault on black reach nob with a maxmini pirate head it went forr a touch over fifty bucks. So, we'll see. Cmon auction cost of 75 cents and actual physical cost of the mini for about 4$ and we'll call my available pool down to...

Slowly... slowly growing...

25-05-2011, 06:31 PM
Hey any growth in a startup company is a good thing. All you guys doing this challenge are startup companies and running in the black even marginally is a good thing. Keep it up and good luck.

06-06-2011, 05:11 AM
Alright so I sold my Gretchin Soviet General dude for $34.11. Way more than I think I had a right to expect. The good news is this is a customer that has bought from me before. Sweet repeat customers! So if I hack of eBay fees and call it 30$ to add to the pool I am at $41.75. I like! That means I can pick up just about any mini to paint up for the contest without worrying too much about what I paid for it. Also like that I had a repeat customer who must like what he's been getting.

But I am going to have to take a break from this contest indefinetly. Why? 'Cause God Damn Canada Post is on strike. I won't bother giving my opinions on labour unions. Wait... Sure I will! I can't stand them. These people aren't mining coal with a canary in a cage to see if they are gonna die or anything. Their not highly trained individuals fighting to have their skills recognized. They get paid well, awesome benifits, and all sorts of other perks. I can't stand goddamn unions.

So anyway once they get all that sorted out I'll be back in biz-nizz. Go team Radom!

Total to date - $41.75

06-06-2011, 11:15 PM
Well done on the sale Scott and a nice total to move on with.

06-06-2011, 11:21 PM
Yeah, nice one my amigo from the north. With all due respect I was a bit suprised to see that general dude at 7.6 on CMON and sold at that price. I think you were as well.

Keep on making that cash rules everything around me, CREAM get the money, Dolla dolla bills ya'll

07-06-2011, 01:22 AM
Yeah Pete, I was a bit suprised by the score and auction total. I think it's just down to the nature of the mini being pretty cool vs. the paintjob aspect. Just one of those things. I find almost anything with a lean towards GW or any halfway decent painting GW ork's usually do okay.

04-07-2011, 04:29 AM
All right now that the stupid postal strike is sorta over with I am back in the game. I am going to list my Bane Legions entry and see how it does. I am starting it at $39.99 starting July 7th. The cost of the mini is around 15$ US so my total of 41.75$ will vary depending on the outcome of the auction. the listing fee's were about 80 cents and the CMON auction credit will be 75 cents so I will be at 40.20$ for the listing, and at 25.20$ if the mini sells. Plus the sale price of course. Allrighty, let's see how it does!

11-07-2011, 04:03 AM
The dude is up.

11-07-2011, 10:10 AM
here you go mate - added to front page widget too.

19-07-2011, 06:57 AM
Allright, so the mini sold for $51 bucks. So if I knock off around $6 for eBay fees that add's around 45$ to the pot. So after deducting the cost of the mini and the listing fees and the CMON credit I am at $70 fro the good guys! My next addition will be the ladder challenge Hell Dorado mini I am working on. Let's see how that does!

Thanks for widgetifying my auction DL!

SO new total, $70.

19-07-2011, 10:44 AM
Well done Scott, nearly doubled your total in one hit. Good luck with the Hell Dorado mini.

20-07-2011, 12:41 AM
Great job man! Keep up the good work!

21-07-2011, 07:48 PM
Very nice man, good job so far!

21-07-2011, 07:57 PM
Great work Scott. Was thinking of getting the mini, was a fun to paint?

07-10-2011, 04:06 AM
Okay, so after a bit of a break I am back at it. I have 70$ in my pocket and I have two mini's up for auction.

First is a Warhammer Empire character. I bought this guy during a 25% off sale so it was 15$ for the blister, two mini's in the blister. So to list the auction with the cost of the mini, the CMON credit, and the listing fee is $7.50 plus another $1.50. So $9 total. Here's the listing....

The other mini was the Hasslefree "Rose" I painted for the comp here. I think the mini cost around 5$. So another $1.50 for the CMON credit and auction fees round it to 6.50$, $15.50 between both mini's this week. Here's the listing...

So two auctions up! Both with min bids of $19.99. Auctually one bid on the Empire guy already, auction only started around an hour ago so that's cool. So I'll call it $44 credit left over and see how this week goes. Since I spent every nickel I have in Vegas (And then some!) I think I am going to reset my totals after this week. And just for fun I am gonna try and see if I can make the eBay widget work here. Let's see how it goes...

07-10-2011, 04:07 AM

Holy smokes! I can make the eBay widget work now! Super thanks for getting it so easy to use DL!

07-10-2011, 10:55 AM
Good luck with them Scott, love the empire character.

07-10-2011, 05:51 PM
good luck dude. 2 bids on the empire guy as of this post.

14-10-2011, 02:16 AM

Allrighty. So I got this guy in trade for cheap. I'd say around 8$. After the CMON credit of 75 cents and the ebay fees of another 70 cents this mean my total pot of $44.50ish less around ten bucks means I have 34.50$ for the good guys still in my pocket. Actually after I get the cash for the Rose and Mordheim money I am going to scale it back down to zero and go from there.

18-10-2011, 05:06 AM

After the auctions for the Hasslefree rose and the mordheim empirey guy closed the Mordheim guy went for $22.39 so after eBay fee's I'll cal it $20 in the bank. The rose mini got zero bids. Humiliation! Ah well, I've been on a post apoc kick anyway and kinda don't mind keeping it for at least a bit anyway. So I'll call my new bank roll total $20. I'll add the total for my Nurgley guy to that when it sells as well (Has a bid on it and ends this sunday.) then I'll start buying my sale mini's out of my total again. I have a FW DKoK Kommissar ready to go up right away too. They usually have no problem selling so hope that works out. Thanks for looking peoples!

Score - $20!

24-10-2011, 05:47 AM
Okey Dokey so the Nurgle Warrior dude went for 31$. I'll take it! So after eBay fee's that takes it down to around 28$ for a new total of 51$. So on this thursday I'll start the DKoK Commissar auction. It'd be nice if it could hit 50 votes over on CMON so I could see what the mini will actually score at. It's at 8.7 but the registered voting is at only 7.9. That's a huge swing, so at 50 votes it's either going to settle up a bit in score or (more likely I think) come crashing down a ton. No biggy either way I am just curious, plus I think I might try to sell it for a premium. FW stuff is pretty popular and in the past I've been able to sell commissar's from this range for around 40 bucks or so. I think I might start it at $49.99 and see what happens. I have till thursday to think about it. Anyway, with the new total of the Hurgle Lord my bank roll is at 48$, and the Death Korps commissar cost me around $15, plus the auction fee and CMON credit bring it to $17ish.

New total - $31

24-10-2011, 01:13 PM
its worth trying a higher price on certain things mate - free listing weekends are best for this as it doesnt cost you anything if it doesnt sell

24-10-2011, 04:43 PM
How do you tell what the voting is on CMON with registered voters vs non. And what exactly happens at 50 votes? I've never heard anythign about this.

24-10-2011, 04:50 PM
you need to be a cmon supporter to see registered v unregistered mate

28-10-2011, 02:35 AM
How do you tell what the voting is on CMON with registered voters vs non. And what exactly happens at 50 votes? I've never heard anythign about this.

At fifty votes apparently a filter is activated that kicks out abnormal scores. Anything +/- whatever there threshold is gets booted out I think. Here's the three auctions I have running....

30-10-2011, 07:51 PM
Hey! Pretty happy the Commissar got a bid on it. So that's good news! Now to see if I can even give away the two hasslefree kids.

31-10-2011, 12:08 AM
Looks like you're going well so far, should start to creep up even further at the end of the week hopefully mate!

Spectral Dragon
31-10-2011, 09:38 AM
sure enough, one bid on the forge world death corp commisar.

Wish you luck man!

03-11-2011, 01:15 AM
Cool I got at least a min bid on all three. And I am taking some commission work from a dude who seems to like the style I paint things in. I'll lump whatever commission stuff I do in with this stuff as well.

04-11-2011, 06:54 PM
Nice to see that all of your current auctions do have a bid on them! I also bought the rose mini many moons ago, but when I saw that I kinda thought someone was making fun of me..the thing is just soo tiny..
On the basing front how do you make the "rocks" they seem like fragments of pillars or something. Do you use a mold for them?

Spectral Dragon
04-11-2011, 06:57 PM
I have a good feeling you'll get a few more bids on each one before it's over.

05-11-2011, 01:12 AM
TY guys.

Nestor the bricks are from a Hirst Arts mold but I didn't make them. I just gave a guy 20$ and he gave me a couple drawers full. Tons of stuff.

05-11-2011, 08:18 AM
Thanks Scott! I should check on ebay then.

07-11-2011, 01:30 AM
Allright. So the DKoK Commissar went for 74$. After eBay we'll call it 68$. Also I re-listed Rose the post apoc hasslefree girl. I had already "paid" for the mini out of my fund but the listing and the auction credit cost another $1.50. Rose sold for $10. Cheap! Also I listed the little Hasslefree samurai girl and she sold for a mighty $11 but I also have to count the credit and listing fee for her of $1.50 as well. That mini also ran me 5$. eBay fee's on the two Hasslefree mini's ran another 2$ as well. So.....

Previous Pot total - $31
Expenses - $18 (HF Samurai mini for 5$, two auction fee's and two CMON credits $3 eBay fee's $10)
Income - $95

New pot total - $108

I do have this auction running until Sunday as well....

It's one of the FW renegade psyker mini's. I don't think it's been all that well recieved but I kinda like this one. Didn't do real hot over at CMON but waddaya do? Maybe a little too samey? Still I painted it quick and tried out a kinda yellow painted steel industrial base thingy that I liked. So this mini ran around $10, the listing fee and auction credit another $1.50. So, new total...

New total - $96.50

I'm working on a commission mini right now. I said I wouldn't take n commissions but I softened and wanted to try it out again. I'm being pretty restrictive on what I do and this newest customer is pretty badass. He gave me a choice of around 30 figs. I picked one to start and asked him what he'd like for colours etc. and he said to just do my thing. That's pretty cool! I'm not charging much though, $40 a mini. I thought if I got back into commission work I'd shoot for $60 a mini but I don't know if I'd get that. And so long as I'm painting mini's I like $40 i more than I usually make selling on eBay (By a large amount too.... unfortunately). So there it is.

07-11-2011, 06:59 AM
Nice job Scott! I do like this rogue psyker. It is one of my favourite minis and I absolutely love its pose. At some point I will give it a go, but this is one of these I would hesitate to let them go..

07-11-2011, 10:27 AM
Well done with the commissar Scott and good luck for the psyker.

Spectral Dragon
07-11-2011, 11:15 AM
Good work on the psyker :)

Wasn't aware people would charge that much for commission!

Oops! I've been undercharging myself for eBay fee's it seems. eBay takes a 9% cut on top of listing fees but I was not aware they charge it on shipping costs now as well. So.... uhm.... yeah. The Psyker sold for the min bid of $25 which I wasn't sure I'd get, but glad I set the bid at the number I needed to be satisfied. So that's good. eBay fee's took out $3 so that's 22$ for the good guys. Also got approval on the commission for the spyglass Warrior Monk so that set's sail for the fables Virginia colonies tomorrow as well. When that lands and the customer likes it I'll get to add another $40 to the total.

So now I need to get painting! I'd like to get something up and listed for next thursday, but that may be a stretch. We'll see. I am working on a plan B for the Red Box contest which may also swing dub's duty for the WAMP monthly contest as it's a little Tre Manor gobbo. Those things be tiny! I'd also like to paint up a Warhammer or 40K orc(k) though. I do like them. Anyway, enough ramble.

New total...

$118.50 for the good guys.
