Heres the details of my challenge:

Rules

Start with 10
I may spend the money on any combination of miniatures, accessories etc I wish but cannot exceed what I have in the kitty.
Ebay and Paypal fees as well as postage and packing are all deductible.
I am free to use any accessories or supplies I already own or are donated free of charge.
I may use a mini I already own but must 'buy it' at RRP from the funds
I wont be counting commission work
Miniatures may be sold in any venue (Ebay, Wamp, LGS, etc)

So what's the first mini/s you're going to paint.

Darklord
29-04-2011, 09:48 AM
Not sure yet mate - I was going to grab something off ebay 2nd hand to maximise bang for my buck. GW is probably the way to go as its most saleable. I need to order from Maelstrom though which gives some discount.
Unless anyone on here has anything nice for a tenner!

warhammergrimace

I'll have the Ironsides command group any day now, and I only plan to keep the guy with the pistol and rifle, which will be part of this year's GD entry if I decide to go.

Darklord

just scoured ebay - not a great deal of choice at this price level but I plumped for maximum saleability so I have gone for a Space Marine Captain from the Assault on Black Reach set. Comes with a nice sculpted banner so should be easy enough to make look impressive enough. Paid 3.60 including postage for him so got a little funds left over - I can always use this if I see a bargain in the meantime - last minute auction buys are often the best if you can find something you like.

Target: 500

Current Profit/Loss: 6.40

Bought: GW 40k SM Captai AoBR (3.60) ,Sold TBC , Profit: -3.60

Good choice - I'm liking how you've been painting SM's up

cheers mate - sick to death of em! never painted any before 6 months ago!!

This arrived in the post this morning so once I get a couple of quick comissions out of the way i will make a start on him. I mentioned him to the client i did the raven guard diorama to (always cross sell!!) and he would be interested if I did him Ultramarines so thats what i will do - if he doesnt like it r his offer is too low Ill pop him on ebay

Darklord
10-05-2011, 05:55 PM
well got 10 minutes so I'm prepping this fella for when the commission I'm on is finished - going for a gaming base but wondering something. Does it need to be a GW bases (or at least a copy) to be gaming legal? Reason I ask is I was going to put him on a sci-fi base I have but its a round lipped version - the diameter is the same but obviously doesn't quite look GW.

ScottRadom
10-05-2011, 06:22 PM
Yeah it needs to be a GW style base to be legal. Remember the round lipped bases are 30mm, not 25 mm. Right?

Darklord
10-05-2011, 08:35 PM
Thanks Amigo!

didnt realise the sculpt was a bit iffy on this still as the 'first level' piece it should be fine. My aim is to have a total for level 2 of 25+ so I need this to sell for around 25 which after fees and postage leave me about 20 and I have 6.40 left from this round. SHould be ok to hit, going for NMM on this as it seems to sell well and looks fancy in the photos

Darklord
17-05-2011, 01:50 PM
Well got my first mini finished. He will be offered to a commission customer for first refusal otherwise he'll be on ebay. Done to a reasonable standard, will see what he brings before I plan the next move

Great NMM, and very nice piece altogether!
Although the dirty gold NMM looks great, I do think the colour looks very similar to the colour of the cloths. I have the feeling this might also be the picture though...
I think it will do very well if you put it on ebay :)

Darklord
18-05-2011, 08:48 AM
thoroughly agree magie, Im still learning on this NMM (think this is about my 6th try) and the colours didnt go as planned, This then clashed with the cloth as I wanted to go similar to the studio job. Its not my finest work but its a reasonable table top job, guess Im sick of Space marines now.

Man, theres a lot of the PFP threads now - supercool!

right my client was a no go on this so he's on ebay now. Kinda nervous about this now - photos really suck on this so not sure what he'll get 20 maybe but he'll be out of the way and onto stage 2 - no idea what yet. Got a few commissions in the queue until about when this auction finishes maybe a bit longer so time to see what happens. I will most likely hit up ebay again see what's going cheap with at the last minute. I'm not looking at large groups as its not really my thing - i may eventually push onto monsters/ vehicles and some forge world stuff (if I get enough in the kitty.

right first auction over, the smurf only sold for 22.70 which is a little disappointing but it wasnt the best paintjob or photos so I suppose that didnt help!
Anyway sold for 22.70
- 0.75 Postage
- 2.32 Ebay Fees
- 1.00 Paypal Fees
=18.63 Profit
(15.03 after model cost)

So my current total read at:
10 Starting Fund

Target: 500

Current Profit/Loss: 25.03

Bought: GW 40k SM Captai AoBR (3.60) ,Sold 22.70 , Profit: =15.03

Not sure what to go for next, 25 in the pot means I can aim for some bigger and beeter mini. Going to surf ebay for any last minute nargains. Might aim for a vehicle of some sort

Had a quick look and theres a couple of auctions finishing this aft Im watching - both Ogre Kingdoms. Failing that i am tempted to grab a Dreadnaught - always fancied doing one can pick them up for a tenner near enough new

Donga
27-06-2011, 02:02 PM
Go for the Dread, do a 'solid' paintjob with convincing weathering. It'll fly out of the door! Marines are a solid choice for ebay. But it's also a bad time of year for ebay selling. Nice weather = less people on internet...

Ogre's aren't that popular an army, i'd be wary but I'm willing to concede that I could be wrong.

Paint em quick, sell em quick!

Darklord
27-06-2011, 05:14 PM
wow, cheers mate, though theres plenty better at it than me!

A weathered effect would be a lot quicker to paint thinking about it - could knock it out in a day probably

think we will go that way

War Griffon
27-06-2011, 06:01 PM
Given the launch of Storm of Magic soon I would be tempted to pick a magician/sorcerer/sorceress type figure or maybe one of the new plastic ones as soon as it launches on 9th July, get it painted up quick and onto fleabay and it should net you a nice profit with your standard of painting.

I did rather well with the High Elf Mage from The Islnd of Blood set DL. Was good fun to paint too.

There are loads of folks selling parts of the armies from the game on ebay.

Have a look. I will be. I might even do another mage in a different scheme.

I know I've been painting a lot of ultramarines lately and my colour might be a little off because of it but I'm pretty sure thats not blue.

People really do need to be careful when listing on ebay. I've had to report a couple of sellers I've bought from when the arriving package isn't what was described or the photo was of a different item.

Darklord
29-06-2011, 10:16 AM
People really do need to be careful when listing on ebay.

I think this isnt about been careful, its a blatant attempt of cheating people. Luckily my reporting seems to have worked as its stopped now.

Its like a guy a few years ago who passed of epic minis as 40k stuff

Jester 666
29-06-2011, 10:25 AM
You're probably right Darklord. I guess there are mistakes and outright deception.

Only the other day I bought a 'Nearly Complete' Battleforce boxed set on ebay. I asked what was missing and was told that only the Rhino was missing.

In fact the only thing left was one 10-man squad and a few spare bits. When I complained, the seller had a mass rant via a message on ebay. I had to report him in the end and got a partial refund.

Seller actually blamed me for his PayPal being barred and strangely the fact he had been fired from his job too. Not sure I understand that one.

People really really should be careful when listing on ebay and don't deliberately mislead buyers either.

Darklord
29-06-2011, 10:26 AM
yup especially these days as its all rights to buyers - ebay doesnt really care about sellers anymore

Jester 666
29-06-2011, 10:31 AM
It's almost an extension of the older saying 'The customer is always right'. I'm not saying I'm some perfect lord of Ebay sellers but I do try to be as accurate as possible in my listings.

Also, Good sellers want the buyer to be happy with what they have bought. I would expect them to contact me if there was a problem and would do everything to sort it out.

It's just good friendly business.

grifon

More and more eBay is becoming and issue, its like the whole "Pro Painted" thing, I mean really haow many people can say that honestly if they know what Professional actually means?

And apparently the new thing on there is the whole Chinese Mass Production of Painted Armies, have you seen all the dragon painting stuff, it would be a nightmare to get noticed on there I would think right now

Jester 666
30-06-2011, 11:05 PM
I admit I use the term Pro-painted in my listings on ebay. Purely because It is my job. I am a professional-painter. I also feel I offer a service rather than just mass-painted muck.

Some of the stuff on ebay listed as pro is dubious to say the least. The thing that made me chuckle was a couple of 'ULTIMATE PRO-PIANTED' Miniatures on there a while back.

Please don't think i'm trying to be posh or show off. But it is a living after all. lol

Sparks
01-07-2011, 12:08 AM
It's also something that is known and therefore searched for, same as putting warhammer in your title. I would think of it that way and of it getting more hits (I think I have put pro and well painted, though that was years ago and I have no idea which was better).

grifon

No not at all Jester! If anything excuse me if I came off snarky! My issue is with the legions of miniatures that you see listed as "Pro-Painted" which look hardly more than dipped in paint and drybrushed, these listings are the ones that I take issues with.

I realize its a term that gets searched and everyone is looking for their edge, but a little bit of integrity and honestly would be a good thing.

Good on you Darklord for reporting people who are being dishonest on there, glad someone is looking out :)

Darklord
05-07-2011, 05:07 PM
I dont use Pro-painted despite it been one of the top keywords on ebay pulse. Yes it will get you more hits but personally I feel that serious buyers (with serious money) tend to avoid the term anyway. Plus whenever I see pro-painted on a listing title I think the worst before I even see it.

Of course its all personal choice and if folks find it works for them kudos to them, we all want the same thing - maximum sale price

Stage 2 is complete, the dreadnaught (heres another pic in case you havent seen the ladder challenge :
http://www.wamp-forum.com/photopost/data/750/Blood_Angels_Dreadnaught.jpg

Not sure what I am going to do next - will have a quick check on ebay. I may 'buy ' a mini from my own stock - have an Avatars of War necromancer that I thought may suit for the new GW winds of magic

Darklord
07-07-2011, 09:23 PM
he's on ebay now. Not too confident with this one, didnt photograph well but we'll see. Hopefully he'll make his money back at least!!

370525181018

I also have the necromancer up too:
370525185414

I already had the necromancer so he will be deducted at RRP which is 9.99 I believe. I havent costed the base as its stuff from the bit box anywayso was free! so stats now read as:

10 Starting Fund

Target: 500

Current Profit/Loss: 2.54

Bought: GW 40k SM Captai AoBR (3.60) ,Sold 22.70 , Profit: =15.03
Bought GW 40k SM Dreadnaught (12.50) Profit: -12.50
Bought AoWNecromancer (9.99) Profiit: -9.99

Doesnt look to healthy but its skewed due to the double purchase. Once they are sold it will hopefully be back in the black! No more purchases until these 2 are sold as 2.54 isn't a lot to grab a mini with! Thinking of a unit possibly next - maybe some dwarves (quick and easy) or maybe some greenskins of some sort. Dunno! I am open to suggestions of course

Ulfgrimr
07-07-2011, 09:28 PM
Best of luck with them both DL. I'd go for orks, you can never have enough greenskins in an army.

I know I'm way, way late on this but just a warning to you or anyone trying the ebay thing.

DO NOT try out any Ogre kingdom stuff at least until they are re-done. I play Ogres and the army list under 8th edition rules doesn't really work. It's not broken to the point of being unplayable however a little 'math-hammer' will prove that there is no choice. Nothing in the army list is as good as the basic Ogre Bull. Forget every other unit type, compared to the basic bull they are overcosted. So there is no reason at all for a gamer to be buying up stuff.

There are also noises about them getting a new army book soon and also some new figures. A big centre piece thing is on the cards (much like the Orc spider thing). So stay away from the Ogres for the time being.

well been busy but found some time to update this. These auctions finished a few days ago and were posted so I can update their totals.

The Dreadnaught went for a total of 38
Initial cost was 12.50
Ebay fees: 3.55
Paypal Fee: 1.68
Postage: 1,75

Which give a grand profit of: 18.52 which is dissapointing but it happens, my fault really for not doing a more eavy metal type paint job

The Necromancer however turned in a great performance. Much better than I was expecting, he sold for 101.77
Initial cost: 9.99
Ebay Fees 9.82
Paypal Fees: 4.17
Postage: 5.23

Which leaves a profit of: 72.56 (see why I count fees and postage in my sales values!!)

So overall I am at:

10 Starting Fund

Target: 500

Current Profit/Loss: 106.11

Bought: GW 40k SM Captai AoBR (3.60) ,Sold 22.70 , Profit: 15.03
Bought GW 40k SM Dreadnaught (12.50) ,Sold 38 Profit: 18.52
Bought AoW Necromancer (9.99), Sold 101.77 Profiit: 72.56

So I have now reached the 100 marker. I am hoping to get in a lot of ebay minis for the next few weeks to bump this up.

Next will most likely be another Avatars of War mini, a marauder champion as he's prepped already will think on it though

Noddwyr
21-07-2011, 02:55 PM
Damn DL, you are doing very well. This is sort of tempting me to start one of these, only problem is I dislike most GW minis. Meh anyway I meant to say good work, you will be at 500 in no time.

Darklord
21-07-2011, 03:00 PM
well the AOW ones are a good bet if you like them as they can be used as proxies for GW if buyers want that. Stuff that can be used for gaming generally does best but I have sold plenty of dio's on ebay

War Griffon
26-07-2011, 11:07 AM
DL how are you working your losses out???

It seems you are taking a hell of a loss on these, take the necromancer as an example it sold for 101.77, but you only got 72.56 profit from it!! That's a loss of 29.91, are you discounting the cost of the mini twice, or are EBay, PayPal and postage fees really that bad now?

Also the Dread, your profit is about half of what it sold for!!??!!

Darklord
26-07-2011, 11:13 AM
I take into account Paypal and eBay fees plus postage costs and cost of mini.

so The necromancer was 101.77 sold
then the following deductions:
Initial cost: 9.99
Ebay Fees 9.82
Paypal Fees: 4.17
Postage: 5.23
leaving 72.56

Ebay fees are 10%, paypal is around 4%. Postage was a bit higher on this than usual as the plinth was heavy.

This is why I take these into account because many would not consider them and think cool made 100 but the money in your pocket shows different. Its why I prefer commission work - cuts out ebay fees straight away.
And this doesnt even take into account cost of packaging, petrol to get to the post office, materials, etc. Lots of unseens!!

War Griffon
26-07-2011, 11:15 AM
But should you need to take the postage cost off as the customer pays that on top of the end of auction price?

Darklord
26-07-2011, 11:19 AM
But should you need to take the postage cost off as the customer pays that on top of the end of auction price?

the 101.77 includes the postage its 97.77 without.

But yes I need to include it as what I charge isn't the same as what it costs

Darklord
28-07-2011, 09:39 PM
next mini is done and on ebay now - cheap as chips at 99p folks - bid high - its to feed my 3 young children lest they starve and you wouldn't want that on your conscience would you?

(also hijack) interesting note, it does not work with the latest version of flash on chrome, which is slightly newer than the versions for IE/FF (chrome = 10,3,181,35, ie/ff = 10,3,181,34)

Yer getting some good results with this mate, and its been interesting to follow your progress too. I would like to see you do a unit/squad (such as the wolves or you still got that Ork gretchin mob?)

Darklord

I left the same one in the center for scaling purposes... I have a substantial number more of the plastics, including free arms & weapons (didn't glue on replacements for the one missing an arm or the one with a broken spear in these shots), but they're all in the same style as the one's pic'd. That's all the metal ones i had, but they're small enough to be snotlin's.

You may notice I normally put the mini cost in but I have no idea what these would be purchased for - I got them free and cant find any for sale so for this occasioan I will class them as 0 cost which help the profit on them a little.

Overall looks like this:

Next up I have the previously mentioned Gretchin mob. This will be my first attempt at a unit for this challenge, Looking forward to doing them as they look fun, will be utilising more NMM for this one I think. After that I will have some more pieces but they are going to be entered into Rotten Harvest so I cant say anymore about those - hoping for 5 but realistically probably only one!

That takes me past the 200 mark which is good. The Gretchin didnt go for mega bucks but I didnt expect them too really and they were a 'blowing off the cobwebs' paintjob. I have a couple of comissions to get out the way first then onto the next thing, not sure what yet, I quite enjoyed the rackham stuff so I may opt for another rackham piece but not sure. Might even post a few on here and see which you guys think!
Hopefully its something I can get to the 250 mark with which signals halfway

cheers Lobo, I paint what I already have. The profit marginis bigger on some as I didnt have a cost price for them because it was unknown. In reality most of those I already owned anyway so made a bigger profit but I am running it as though I had to buy them in the first place. So by using stuff I already have in reality that gives me a bigger actual profit than going out and buying overpriced necrons!

Some great options you have there!
My first reaction would be the dragon, but I'm not sure how the turn out rate would be, comparing time spent on painting it and actual selling price. That of course depends on how fast you can paint a large piece like that.
My choice would be for the Rackham ogre. Your previous Rackham pieces show that they sell well and I think your style really takes the best out of these already wonderful miniatures.
Good luck with the next project!

I think I am swaying towards the mercenary or the Dragon. Dragon would probably bring more though unsure whether to base it or leave on the integrated base. The mercenary would probably be more fun to do on the other hand!!

I wanted to pick your brains on what you think best. I am about to statr some redbox Dwarve's partly for a Wamp Ladder challenge but also to ebay (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=9&pub=5574873781&toolid=10001&campid=5336779995&customid=&icep_uq=&icep_sellerId=&icep_ex_kw=&icep_sortBy=12&icep_catId=16486&icep_minPrice=&icep_maxPrice=&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229508&kwid=902). NOw I was wondering whether you think I would get more for them the bigger the lot. I have 22 of them in total (thanks Tre!) mainly warriors with the odd champion and even a lady one thrown in.

So I was thinking whether to paint the entire lot and sell as one gaming lot or do the odd one seperate?

Any thoughts on whats most likely to sell best?

Vern

Personally, 22 separate lots (but do all the dwarfs with same style bases) listed at the same time

Darklord

really?

NeatPete

I'd list them in two lots of 11. the per listing fee would have to eat into any margin you are shooting for on 22 of them. Not to mention some may not sell for whatever reason. At least with 11 you can get half of them sold in one auction and maybe you get someone who wants them all on the second auction driving up prices. I'm no ebay vet myself but thats how I'd do it.

Darklord
17-01-2012, 05:01 PM
listing fee I can stick them on at 99p and it would be free so thats not really an issue

NeatPete
17-01-2012, 05:03 PM
oh, nevermind. Sure would suck to sell a mini at .99 though and it still seeems like PITA to me. How are you basing them? round or square? Whats your target audience? WHFB people? If so I'd look up what a squad size is and try to go from there.

yeah I think Warhammer would make sense so 25m square (or whatever they base em on)
there are a 3 main groups based on weapons then there's the character type ones. I could possibly then split into 4 lots based on those - roughly 6 in each group

Vern
17-01-2012, 05:14 PM
My reasoning's a bit like Pete's - who the audience?

They're not really completable with GW dwarfs - so a large unit may not be attractive to buyers. But individually, you get RPGamers (a couple for a dungeon), or warband types (maybe 6 or so for SoBH). You also get collectors, who maybe just want to pick up one or two.

The start price isn't necessarily a problem, as ebay seem to have a least one 'free' listing weekend a month. Of course, if they don't all sell, you'll probably be able to work out a rough mean price - then list what's left of them at 'buy it know'

Think your biggest 'problem' will be whether to use round or square bases

**edit, that was typed before your last post Brett

So that takes my total past the 300 mark so less than 200 to go. Its interesting that the biggest and most expensive model is probably the poorest in terms of % profit and the ogre is possibly the highest. It just shows that its not always best to choose big expensive models to paint and sell.

I have 2 redbox minis up for grabs on ebay at the moment and another to list tonight so they will bring the total further up. I am just starting a set of 23 redbox Games Dwarfs that I will be selling thogh I dont know whether it will be as one lot or a few.
