I thought seen as we have a nice new forum we needed a nice new painting contest. so we have
Wamp goes Wyrd

ok here are the rules:

you must be a wamp member to enter

You may enter as many times as you like, but you are only eligible for one prize, which will be awarded for your highest ranked entry, any subsequent entries will be removed and replaced with an alternative entrants submission

Entries must not have been made public anywhere else beforehand, if it is then you will be disqualified

Entries must be submitted to annonymously to me in the form of photographs

Entries must be Wyrd miniatures , any others will be disqualified.

The deadline for submission is March 22nd 2009

Prizes may change, notification will be made if this occurs

Judging will be done by a single person and that person will not have knowledge of who the entry belongs too.

There will be prizes for 4 winning entries as decided by the Judge.

The judges decision is final

Ok now the good stuff, the prizes:

1st $50 Wyrd gift voucher
2nd $25 Wyrd gift voucher
3rd $15 Wyrd gift voucher
4th $10 Wyrd gift voucher
(prizes value is dependant upon number of entrants and may be less than shown)
Remember you can enter as many times as you like and as long as its wyrd then anything goes, single figure, diorama, whatever you want.

To judge the contest we have a special person to do it. He is a multiple golden demon winner and one of wyrd's very own painters:
Rob Cardiss aka Demonherald

Now get painting!

I'm in, just got to root through my lead pile to find a wyrd mini - or I might just have to get some money together!!!

RogerB
30-01-2009, 07:47 PM
Good luck with the comp. I feel I'm just not going to have time for this one but hopefully for further competitions I will. I told Liz it would be Rob as judge.

ScottRadom
30-01-2009, 07:48 PM
I ordered a whack in anticipation of winning Iron Painter using Wyrd only mini's. Sigh. The backup plan was to get eliminate in the first round for the next 31 years using Wyrd mini's, but this will work too!

Darklord
30-01-2009, 07:48 PM
a couple of things i will say here folks.
the prize total is dependant upon number of entries so the more the merrier, and dont forget you can enter more than once if you like.
i have lined some more special competitions up which i will post in the coming soon thread.
feel free to spread the word on this competition, the more people we get entering these things the more prizes i can get for future ones so your support is vital, so tell your friends post it on any other forums you can

Can I use a wyrd mini with a secondary mini from another company?

lizcam
30-01-2009, 08:54 PM
I put up an announcement on Cmon about this in the general forum but it might be a good idea to do a news artical about it too. I'll let Brett or Tuxie do that. Don't want to step on any toes or anything (as I take off my combat boots after flattening DL's toes already).

Darklord
30-01-2009, 08:56 PM
already on cmon and wyrd andyou cant use other companies minis

Hi Folks - I come via CMoN and Liz's advert :)
Matt just sent me a wyrd mini but I don't think I'll be able to paint it in time. If I can I will.

Darklord
01-02-2009, 05:04 PM
hey Boris, nice to see you here, hope you can get something entered, just think of the prizes to spur you on!!

Boris
01-02-2009, 05:11 PM
I know, but I have to finish my current project for the end of Feb, which only leaves me a couple of weeks for this.
Then I need to be sure to have my mum's mother's day pig mini (I kid you not!) finished in time, and then, and then...
:D If I can I will.

Darklord
01-02-2009, 05:43 PM

im an owl boris

Boris
02-02-2009, 02:55 PM
Ah - is that a Sheffield thing? Or do you have some odd gender issues (just joking!).
I've not lived there a year yet...and yes I am a girl, sometimes a scary one, but female none the less.
Boris is an old nickname, but I've always used it when I'm online.
:)
I've met Amazon Warrior - we were the two girls at PB last year. I also met Queen of the Uni Frogs from CMoN at GD. I don't mind there only be a few girls - just gives us more boys to pick on each :D

Darklord
02-02-2009, 03:14 PM
owls are sheffield wednesday fans. i was just checking you didnt support the rubbish sheffield team

RogerB
02-02-2009, 03:14 PM
You mean there's a good one? I know, I know, people in glass houses and all that...

Boris
02-02-2009, 03:28 PM
Don't support either - can never remember which one plays where :)

Darklord
02-02-2009, 03:30 PM
we play in sheffield, they play in the pigsty!

so whose entering the wyrd contest the?
im hoping to get a couple of entries in myself

ScottRadom
02-02-2009, 03:33 PM
Hey, I saw on PB that you had listed these contests as annonymous? Is that true? It sucks if it is, I value the WIP input I get.

Hinton
02-02-2009, 03:41 PM
so whose entering the wyrd contest the?

The Wyrd contest here? I'm hoping that I'll be able to; only time will tell.

Darklord
02-02-2009, 05:07 PM
good deduction hinton despite my poor spelling!!
hope you do.
@Scott, the wyrd one is annonymous but if people feel strongly about future ones not being then i will look at changing them

ScottRadom
02-02-2009, 05:16 PM
I really, really, really feel strongly about NOT having any contests here anonymous. Even if I don't act on advice given me immediately I sure take it into the next fig, and it's great to get the feedback doing WIPS. I seriously would be much less interested in anon. contests. Virtually everyone knows each others styles and stuff anyway. I can definetely pick DL's stuff out of a lineup, and given that many of us use the same photo backdrops etc. I think the anon thing is bunk anyhow.

Darklord
02-02-2009, 05:20 PM
well im not stuck in my ways on this, we could run polls to decide future events. How do you feel about having more guest judges in the future?

lizcam
02-02-2009, 05:32 PM
I like guest judges and I don't mind having a few anonymous contests, especially the ones with guest judges but either way is fine.

ScottRadom
02-02-2009, 06:56 PM
I love the guest judge concept. I think a panel of PB'ers might be slick and maybe we could return the favor? I still really hope to have the annonymity thingy waved. Maybe if we start having big money contests and stuff it could be an issue. Golden Demon isn't anonymous is it? Or maybe it is? I'll still particiapte either way.

Darklord
02-02-2009, 07:00 PM
GD is annonymous. i cant garuntee guest judges but i will see what i can do. i will remove the anonimity rule for the next one (although it still needs to be previously unseen work elsewhere (but wip's are allowed.
will that do ya

ScottRadom
02-02-2009, 07:37 PM
Oh yeah, I don't want to submit old stuff. It's just that the WIP stuff really helps me as a painter.

TwoGunBob
02-02-2009, 07:50 PM
I'll be honest that I only do contests that are open and judged by a guest judge or panel of judges. Forum votes or whatever... well I've been in a few that were more about popularity contests or stuffing the ballot bag. I prefer to put my trust in the celebrity panel.

In addition I like to read how I can improve or even techniques I might try while painting to improve the end product.

ScottRadom
02-02-2009, 07:54 PM
What's wrong with popularity contests? I think they should actually have those. Maybe I'll go start a poll with another username asking "Who's the awesomest!" then make another ten accounts or so to boost my scores. That way when the wife calls me one of her many cruel (and unimaginative) names I can show her hard imperical data citing that I am indeed the "awesomest"!

Darklord
03-02-2009, 10:53 AM

Brett et all.....

I would really, really like to know if we can push the closing date of this contest back by 1-2 weeks. Reason?

I haven't got my stuff yet, and I would bet I won't see it until mid next week. I want to take part in this contest mutliple times, and I will participate AT LEAST once even with the Mar15th deadline. I also will be supplying some of the Saskatoon guys with Wyrd mini's so tack on a day or two to hook up with them and it get's tighter by the day.

However....

If the choice was to push the deadline for this further back meant delaying the next sponsored challenge then I would not want for that to happen.

Love,

Scott Radom.

Darklord
10-02-2009, 10:18 AM
hmm, well there are another 4 or 5 comps to schedule after this but iam actually away between 7-15th march so i did wonder the same thing.
I could maybe give a week extra.

future comps will be run at 4 weeks generally but i will announce on here (wamp members get to know first!) which contest is next to give everyone a chance to get minis in.
BTW The next one will be Gamezone

RogerB
10-02-2009, 10:20 AM
I think I should be able to get a Gamezone mini at Salute.

Darklord
10-02-2009, 10:22 AM

On that note does anyone know of a reliable and cheap place to get GZ minis in the UK?

Failing that somewhere to get GZ minis reliably and cheaply that isn't in the UK.

RogerB
10-02-2009, 11:29 AM
I don't know how reliable but Atemis Black's sells some GZ minis.

Undave
10-02-2009, 11:35 AM
Yeah Arty's has got them but he never seems to be there and he hasn't got the one I want. I fired off an email to him ths morning so I'll see how long (if ever) it takes him to reply.

The CMoN shop only has Dark Elf Predadorethethethethethethcrithwaddles

RogerB
10-02-2009, 11:36 AM
Well, if you're going to go to salute, Artemis Black's will be there. Of course that may not solve the issue of him having the one you want.

24-02-2009, 04:21 PM
Man I wish we could do WIP's. I am trying to really do well on this one and I coulda used some advice. I am taking what I learned on my Spartan fig but I am kinda lost about adding in the "warm" shading. I don't want to go overboard or anything. I've spent about 4hrs on the skin, which is probably more than the total time on my Leonidas fig so I hope it shows come reveal time!

Any other progress out there?

ScottRadom
25-02-2009, 02:53 PM
I'm working oin one right now. I'm really happy with it, and I think it's easily the best work I've done. Going much slower. It's a mindset thing. When I sit down I generally think "I'm gonna paint this guy" now I sit down and think "I'm gonna work on the shading of the lower half of the skin" so more time spent but I think much more fine results. We'll see how the stuff does!

Darklord
25-02-2009, 04:06 PM
sounds good young Scotty. I'm really looking forward to this comp. to see if people try harder than from the usual ones we do now theres free lead involved!

ScottRadom
25-02-2009, 05:27 PM
The prize carrot isn't whats doing it for me at all, mostly 'cause of my mad stacks. I think the best stroke of genius inputting this together was the guest judge. I am keen to see what some honest, impartial crit's of my work will reveal.

Everyone here and other places on the net is great, but the problem is most of the people offering crit's know me, my work, and my progrssion, so rather then get untempered raw advice I get my present work typically comared to my past work as opposed to just a median set of painting criteria used to judge what's good from what's not. So that's what's got me going is to see what an impartial painter of DemonHeralds calibre has to offer about my latest efforts. Very cool, and very exciting. I'm even going to try and change up my photo backgrounds and learn to make a montage just so it extra super duper doesn't look like my usual net offerings.

So all around great idea DL, very cool.

Darklord
25-02-2009, 05:36 PM

btw if anyone has any suggestions for guest judges then let me know. some sponsored events will be judged by the manufacturers so not all can have guest judges but i can fit some in so let me know if you know someone fit for the job

Felix Panigua, Kev White (I want to get him to comment on my UnDave!), Grumpy old Mad Mike Dodds, an EM guy like Fil Dunn (Might help you maintain good connections with them Brett?), Toney Monero (The master of our time!), Anders/Ritual, The UltraForge kids, Any slayer sword winner (I think I could get Jeff Wilhelm of Dragon Forge designs to have a look).

Is that Demon herald? I knew he was a GD winner but didn't know he went all the way. Cool, seems a nice dude. I like it when decent folks excel in this hobby as I have run into my fair share of pricks. And perhaps other people might say that of me. Hmmm.

Cool. Anyway that's my fav part of the new site is the guest judges. Also the different maufacturers are really going to get me to stretch my legs out.

I started prepping my mini last night - got a bit over enthusiastic with some sanding and have lost some small details eek!

no the minis have to be wyrd but (say it quietly - other peoples bases are ok)

Boris

I'll be submitting at least one for this. I just realized the more we enter the more the prize pool and thus chances of winning something! Maybe you could talk FF into some consolation prizes:) I like winning those, since I wont win much else.
I actually like the Anon contests and rarelly like to post WIP for a comp peice. But I see both sides, I'd like to see things changed or switched up so everyone gets some of waht they like.

Darklord
27-02-2009, 09:20 PM
i look forward to seeing your entry for it. yeah the whole secret or open thing is tricky, we decided to go open for most as it means people here can get help from others and thats what this whole site is based around really. the guest judges throws in an added dimension

ScottRadom

had a panic last night about this. i realised i will only have until friday to get any entries done for this. away to scotland on saturday for a week which leaves a week after that BUT if i do get past Wren then i only have that 1 week to start and finish an iron painter entry!

Iron? Brett you're made of Steel mate!

Darklord

dont feel like it! that last round of iron painter was probably my hardest to get through for some reason dont know whay really. anyway thats done and gone.
luckliy my 2 planned wyrd entries arent huge unndertakings so i should get one if not both done.
1st one looks better than i thought although my delvan mud is empty not a drop left so thats a strain. at least i got the purple and space wolves grey - thats all you need brother

well i got a bit more time on this as my planning afternoon on the mountain fell short when 5 minutes out the door the bike and the bridge had a difference of opinion and i was caught in the cross-fire! but now i lost friday morning as i got reporters coming around.

Hang on Brett. Reporters? Bike? Bridge? What the heck are you talking about?

Darklord
03-03-2009, 04:36 PM
the bike and the bridge were temporarily attracted to each other despite mine and my brakes best efforts to keep them apart! little tip, pedals you cant get your feet out of easilyy dont help when your falling over, so now im nicely bruised with a dodgy painting arm!
the reporters are because i gave up smoking so agreed to help the nhs with publicity

Vern: I'd not judge Artemis by what's going on at the moment. I'd hope he'd be back on his feet fully by the time the GZ comp is on. I ordered from him last year and he was totaly decent and reliable. I also ordered from him last weekend - if/when the stuff comes, I'll let you know.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'll be entering something in this competition: I really really do prefer anonymous submissions - wouldn't it be possible to enter WIPs anonymously so you can still get feedback? Or would that make the software go mental?

Vern
05-03-2009, 04:59 PM
I also ordered from him last weekend - if/when the stuff comes, I'll let you know.

Thanks - think Undave has ordered to - I hope is back up and running & reliable, as he's got some sweet stuff on his site :)

v22TTC
07-03-2009, 02:46 AM
Well, got my stuff today! Honesty demands that I say that one of the minis wasn't there but it was a pretty big order of bits from all over the place - pretty sure he'll sort it out promptly.

I've just tried to check but can't find it - what time is the deadline on March 22nd?

And I'm not at all motivated by prizes but like to know what others think of my stuff. Assuming someone got two pieces into the top four, do they get credited as such, then their lower ranking piece is exchanged for someone else's in terms of prizes? Or do you just never know?

I have to say, I ordered some stuff direct from Wyrd last Tues (6/3) & they came this morning :D that's top class service!

v22TTC
10-03-2009, 06:16 AM
Yeah, Wyrd's cutomer service is excellent (if they mess up your order they send you a free mini to say sorry too). I was going to say 'I'll never understand why you can get a mini from the States in half the time it takes to get a mini from the next county, here' but I do understand: England's sh*t! :P

EldinTux
10-03-2009, 11:22 AM
I've never had any problems with Wyrd - prompt friendly service with emails telling you exactly what's happening :)

v22TTC
10-03-2009, 11:30 AM
Suppose the only problem I've had would be the boxes they send small orders out in, which are just slightly too big for the standard UK letterbox, so then you have go and pick the thing up the next day and the PO staff scowl at you as they hand the tiny box over to you....

I heard them say, "Oh, it's that one!"

"Stupid!"

While they were getting it from the back. If that's a common problem, I should probably pm Nathan and let him know. Who likes to wait an extra day for their toys?

Boris

Quick Q about the Wyrd comp - is it going to be ok to take my entry to Salute? I wasn't sure if it was too close to the deadline.

NeatPete
10-03-2009, 05:03 PM
Yeah Wyrd is my steez. I can't say enough good things about them. They send fast packages for $3.50 shipping. I placed an order Thursday afternoon and got my package Yesterday (Monday) when I got home form work. Good, clean casts with great sculpts. I've had a few packages with random free lead in them as well. Made me feel pretty special when I had some flame inserts 3 months before they ever got released. Good small business that I will no doubt continue to support for a long time.

I will have two minis in this comp. and I'm hoping one of them gets me in a winners spot. One of them was actually free mini from wyrd now that I think about it.
Good luck everyone!

lizcam
10-03-2009, 05:09 PM
It's probably not a good idea to take the entry to Salute as Demonhearld will be there and it's supposed to be a blind judging. So, barring anything DL might say later, the answer would be no.

(ooo. This moderater thing could go to my head!).

ScottRadom
10-03-2009, 05:13 PM
I placed two orders with wyrd directly. One came, no fuss, no troubles.

The second (bigger) order has yet to arrive. The address on my order that I recieved was actually incorrect, but someone down at the post office was on the ball and got it sorted out. I eMailed Nathan and he asked me to check it out on my end which I did, and he said he'll fire me a new order.

So I want I want to stress here is unlike the MANY other companies out there that will make a mistake, not ship product etc. Nathan was easy to get a hold of, suggested the problems, and did not hesitate to bite the bullet and re-ship the order (though it hasn't arrived yet, but Canadian Customs are a tough bunch!). So I still rate the experience as positive. Now that the LGS has easy access to Wyrd product I will order through them, and I ordered a couple Executioner models the other day.

Well I got bored of my meticulously planned piece and just decided to have fun last night on another Wyrd mini, splashing paint around like a big kid in playgroup - great fun! :D Seems like a more Wyrd approach - rigid planning's more GW....

Got a pretty interesting effect that I'll do something with today. Hope I might be able to finish another mini too by deadline - I certainly could if it weren't for them pesky, time-consuming bases....

I know we've had ages to get something painted but those ages have coincided with one of the worst times in my life that is proving very time-intensive (and head-wrecking) to sort out.... Which is why I decided to just have some Wyrd fun! :D

Decided to get my feet wet with both Wyrd miniatures as well as international forum minis painting contests with this one. Of course my 17+ years of painting haven't taught me all that much really, so I'm a decidedly mediocre painter, but taking part is what counts, right?

We have got a total of 21 entries in which is absolutley brilliant for our first wamp special and even more so when you consider we ran it at the same time as one of wyrd's own contests!
One bit of loose end tying up needed: can whoever entered the perdita pm me to let me know their identity please. If i dont know whos it is then they cant win a prize!
dont forget guys you can go comment on the entries and rate them if you like. the aim of these contests are to help us all improve so feedback is great. but remember these entries are anonymous so keep it that way

Thank you for the welcome!

For future contests, I actually have a Gamezone mini I bought and didn't even take out from the blister (as the project it was meant for sort of dried up a bit) so the next contest seems mighty tempting as well, giving a great excuse for building and painting that one. And I'm pretty sure that no one else will be painting the same model... (to tell the truth, I can't even remember the exact model I got  )

Thanks for organising this competition - I had great fun and just pretty much did the exact opposite of everything I would normally do: switched the brainbox off and went with my intuition ... the Wyrd way. Some of it worked, some didn't but I've learned a lot.

Lots of great entries and some have given me some pretty strange ideas to pursue.:) Have to agree that that Perdita with the check top is very, very nice indeed. Best thing about these anonymous comps is seeing who did what when the judging's been done.

Totally - I think the judging/ranking is really just a kind of hardcore feedback. Some judges I will never agree with so their ranking doesn't matter too much to me but this does since I tend to agree with what Rob says and scores.

Mmmm, after a life of being a good guy constantly booted in the nads, I am toying with the idea of swapping my green lightsaber for a red one and becoming all corrupt and venal though - see how it works....

I do it mainly to see my enemies driven before me and to hear the lamentations of their women.

"That is good."

Pete: Sorry to hear that mate - really glad you're OK though! (apart from being a bit poorer).

Thanks V22TTC,
Bummer of a day after ya know? Oh well, all will be well and in a month I'll be totally over it. My car crunched like tin can. Front of integra v. back of Chevy, Japan got whooped! I'll see if I can have an adjuster send me some pics so you can see the little rice rocket with a broken nose.

Cmon Rob gimme some good news!

oh, I guess I click on the rating itself. My work comp wont let me though... Guess I'll have to hand out 10s to my entries when I get home!

You got it Pete click on the rate link

Heh, I was wondering that too.... If I click on the rating link (in the thumb) it takes me to the page with the pic and comments but I can't see anywhere there that I can do the rating thing....

Some albums you cant rate - monthly comps for instance, others if you click on the rate link you should get a drop down box on the next page which you can rate the picture

v22TTC

Nope, not with me. Say for the Wyrd comp, you get the page of thumbs initially. Clicking on either Rating or Comments takes me to the same page with the same options - big pic that you can usually click on to enlarge with title, existing rating and pic description, comments and a comments box at the bottom.

Where should the drop down box appear?

NeatPete

yeah I click and it takes me to an error page... Oh well, I'm not huge rate fan anyway.

v22TTC
27-03-2009, 01:22 AM
I get the error page if I click on rating and I'm not logged in.

I'm not too bothered either (if it's out of ten, you need halves too IMO for better accuracy) - it just bugs me not knowing stuff and always feeling stupid and incompetent whenever I try to use one of these puter efforts....

I only get the error if I click from the home page.

yeah, I entered the gallery and tried it again, I should see drop menu but I don't. Maybe there's a filter for newcombers or something? No clue...

Pop up blocker settings maybe? Not sure how to change them so can't test that....

hmm starnge works for me. the rating box should be just below the actual rating with stars (which in turn is below the number of views)

v22TTC

I just get view, rating (number and stars, but no boxes or anything I can click on), pic description then the yellow bar with pictures navigation around that area.

Only if it used lots of guile - no chance in a toe to toe. Neither's got a chance against the palm blast of a Tai Chi gibbon.
