View Full Version : Endor's Sapo

Hey, hey, the beauty has arrived and I started work on him immediately this weekend :)

Great joy to paint, even if I'm still only at the basecoating stage. Got him primed black and then light grey (Tamya Superfine). Next step was to pick colors, and in the end I decided I needed a change from painting blue, so chose to paint him in a warm red tone after checking loads of lizard and frog pics on the net. I'm sure my wife thought I was going a bit crazy, why are you looking at all those frogs? Lol

Decided on a bright red and found a blood red from Coat d'arms, mixing in heartfire and menoth white highlight from p3. For shading I mixed blood red with exile blue from p3, then exile blue on it's own.
With these colors ready on the 'dry-palette' I got cracking on JBT's wetblending technique. I have started using it more, and it gives you a great start quite fast. Still struggling a bit getting the consistency perfect, I'm often applying the paint slightly too thin like John mentioned in his sbs.

Anyway, here are the pictures of the progress so far:

Nice. You seem to have gotten the hang of wetblending :-)

Endor mate Your version looks evil!! the red and the dark around the eyes gives it a look of "Im gonna Mess You Up" lol

nice work so far!!

Ah, another one!
And very different, for that. Your wet-blending looks excellent; tons better than mine. There's so much going on already, and your colour choices are very promising.
I'm not sure of the green on those 'ears' (tympanum, apparently). At the moment it looks like it should blend into the skin slightly more (just a little more brown in it, or slightly less saturation), but I trust you know what you're doing.
I'm looking forward to more.

Hi guys, not too much time lately, but after a couple of late night sessions Sapo is at least progressing a little bit :)

The skin is not finished, only wet blended twice and needs some correcting. Had to move on to other areas to get a sense of progression, though. Maybe I'll manage to get him ready if the deadline is extended :D

I do hope so buddy, he's looking dapper. I love the vibrant skin tones.

If anyone has ideas on how to make the eyes more lifelike, I'm all ears. Also wonder if I can use water effects as a substitute for gloss varnish, one of the few things I haven't got in my paint box at the moment..

The first thing that needs to be said is that it's looking fantastic so I really hope you can finish this. It deserves to be in the contest!
The advice I can pass on to you is having recieved the advice myself is that making the black even more black makes a huge difference. GW chaos black is the best I found. Darken the eyeballs toward both edges to enhance the depth, a few layers of the skin colour wash maybe. As for the gloss varnish being substituted with water effect I haven't tried it but theoretically it should work m8. If you aren't in a hurry for varnish and you need me to post some to you let me know.
