The gauntlet has been cast! Now will the brushes do battle! Good luck, brave knight. My lions are hungry for a challenge...

27-08-2013, 08:51 PM
So the end date is October 7, yes?

27-08-2013, 10:06 PM
Sure! That sounds perfect!

28-08-2013, 12:38 AM
Go big or go home!

28-08-2013, 04:21 AM
I say go tiny, go for the Reaper Fairydragon. :D

28-08-2013, 02:59 PM
I was tempted by the fairy dragon.

But, I just received a rather large box full of reaper bones from the kickstarter and there are several dragons that need attention. I picked Ebonwrath. I'd like to work on black which has always been a challenging color for me. Sadly, I had a slight misstep when boiling him to reposition the legs- I burned off the end of his tail!
But that was yet another opportunity in disguise. Out came the greenstuff and I sculpted him a new one. I like it better! Here he is all primed and such. I went ahead and pinned the wings and attached them since they're flexible and I think I can paint in between. The top of the head I'm going to wait on until I get the insides painted.
I think I might break out the water effect and do a swampy base for this fellow if I have time. I raided the garden last night for roots and twigs. Hooray for dragons! I'm planning on black, but with some bright green and white patterns on the back and wings.

I'm really kicking myself for not buying a few of the dragons during the Reaper KS. I really want the steampunk-ish dragon and Kaladrax, but will be stuck with paying full price now whenever I get around to picking them up. I do like what you've done with her tail and am looking forward to seeing both your projects come along.

Nice. Good work on the sculpting.

NK is doing the Pathfinder Red dragon from the Reaper KS. He's painting it as a green. I'm writing this post instead of him because I banned him from the computer for the day. <Evil Dad> Maybe he'll get more painting done this way. ;)

I will urge him to take some WIP shots and post them tonight when I get home.

Oh good! I love that pathfinder dragon! I was thinking about doing a blue one, but decided against it, so this will work much better. I'd hate to do the same model.

I've done a bit more basic shading, used a few washes when I really knew better, and promptly put watermarks on the wings! Sigh. I'll fix it, but in the meantime I've been playing around with the idea of trying to a pattern similar to a marble salamander on the black dragon, but in green and black instead of yellow.
I put some doodles on the wings to test out the idea. I'm not sure if I should continue the pattern on the dragon's back and tail. I think I want to, but maybe it will be too busy? Anyway, here's what I've done thus far:
I want it to look more natural- like the dragon would blend well with his swampy environment, rather than just being plain black. They'll be a brighter green and shaded or course, but you get the general idea.

Well, I can't got anywhere or do much this holiday weekend on account of work, so I decided to work on the swampy base. Sorry to keep posting so much. I just like to document steps! Plus, I noticed there really aren't a lot of swamp tutorials out there. So, if anyone wants, I've got a few more pics of the base in progress. And I could probably duplicate it again. Sculpey makes me much happier than green stuff!
Right now I'm waiting for my envirotex to dry on my sample swamp before I pour the swamp water in this one.

nice drsgon, I like the pattern Dunno how you feel about them but I did a dragon with stripes using just weathering powders over a basecoat. Its an easy and fun way to get a more realistic effect:

quite hard to see on the photo but gives you the idea,

This is NightyKnight I am sorry for not posting yet I got rather busy all of a sudden. 35083350843508535086
This is my dragon prepped I also base coated ,and did some shadowing.
Again sorry for not posting sooner.

11-09-2013, 01:59 AM
Awesome! We've still got lots of time! I've been distracted, too. These crazy pathfinder goblins wandered onto my desk and refuse to leave!

26-09-2013, 08:19 PM
Argh! I don't think I'll ever finish this ginormous dragon!! Here's where I am- the dragon's still removable from the base.

26-09-2013, 08:24 PM
whoa! nice dragon. Isee some green things out of the mouth and also some on the wings. What's that all about? I may understand more with a top down shot. Great base and great looking dragon so far.

26-09-2013, 08:51 PM
Wow! She's looking great so far! Can we see a shot of the pattern on top of the wings?

27-09-2013, 02:17 PM
sure! Here it is- I'm still debating continuing the pattern on the body of the dragon, but more subdued with a darker olive green. The green on the face is supposed to be acidic drool. Here's a close up of the face as well, with the unfortunate bat!

30-09-2013, 09:23 PM
Looking good, Corporea. I love the bat and the acid drool.

NightyKnight stalled out a bit on his the last few weeks, until I reminded him last night that there is only a week left. I've never seen a teen fly up out of a couch faster. It was hilarious. One second I was getting monosylabic teen grunts and the next the information hit his brain, and it looked like the chair ejected him.

He kind of got stuck on the highlighting as this is really his first full attempt at getting light right on a mini and not just drybrushing. I found a good Zenithal light tutorial for him on Massive VooDoo and he has taken to it like a fish to water. The strides he's taken already on this mini are impressive, but he has a lot of work to do yet to be done by Monday.

30-09-2013, 11:08 PM
I do love the bat being chewed up in the dragons maw but at the moment I'm not sold on the pattern on the wings. They don't fit into the relationship you have created between the dragon and the cool base! The acid pattern doesn't work for me but don't change the acid maw ;)

01-10-2013, 02:55 AM
No worries, Andy. If he needs some more time, that would be fine with me. My cat is sick and likely going to have surgery tomorrow, so I may be useless for painting for a few days.

Not sure about the pattern on the wings either. I always thought plain black wings were too boring, so I wanted to spice it up, but it may be too bright. Hmmn... I could always darken it down to brown and olive.

01-10-2013, 07:42 PM
Edit...uh, yeah. Going to put cat to sleep tonight. Definitely will be useless for painting for awhile... so, NightyKnight, are you willing to help a Damsel in Distress and extend our time-frame? If not, no worries- I can turn him in as he is. No pressure either way.

01-10-2013, 08:21 PM
Sorry to hear about your cat Corporea. :(

03-10-2013, 09:46 PM
Sorry about your cat. Take the time you need, NK will be more than fine with it. The minis will be there when you are feeling up to it. Take a week and you guys can set a new date then.

03-10-2013, 11:46 PM
First sorry about your cat. Second I am fine with what my dad (TaleSpinner) proposed.
Hope you feel better.

08-10-2013, 06:48 PM
Sorry to hear about your cat, sick kitties are no fun. I've gone through that as well. Look forward to seeing what you get up to when you get back.

12-10-2013, 10:43 PM
Thanks everyone for well-wishes! And thanks to NightyKnight for the extra time! Lord Squeakerbane ended up with mouth cancer-poor fellow. But, I'm ready to get back on track- when shall we set our end date? Anytime is good for me.

16-10-2013, 03:50 PM
He's taking the PSAT today and had a Speech tryout last night, so he's been a little preoccupied. I'll get him to come on here and post tonight.

16-10-2013, 11:00 PM
Hi its me Nightyknight. I would like to propose a week and a half but if you have any other propositions I am willing to hear them.

19-10-2013, 04:43 PM
Sounds great, NightyKnight! I've been totally distracted from painting by the comment section on the Reaper Kickstarter! So- the 26th or the 27th? Hope the exam and tryouts went well! Strong work! I actually picked up my brush yesterday- a #6 Davinci to work on the wings some more. It's coming along!

01-11-2013, 10:18 PM
Hello every one. this is Nightyknight. I just finished my project.:jiggy:I can paint again so I propose a week and a half more.

02-11-2013, 10:46 PM
Well I did some painting today. I actually got a lot done I have mostly been doing some work on zenithal lighting. so here is my dragon to date.
Thank you.

03-11-2013, 01:20 AM
Awesome job, NightyKnight! The shading on the wings is beautiful! I really like the highlights! I've been working, too, but don't have pictures yet. A week and a half sounds perfect. Did you want to finish the 11th or 12th? We're almost there! Go Dragon Team, go!

04-11-2013, 02:17 AM
Hello all. I have had a bad cold and spent the day painting. My dragon now has a name. It is (drum roll) Old Scar Eye Scourge of Taltos. He has a back story involving some adventurers and a very pointy stick. I don't have the full story planed but at the end I will post it with the final paint job planed but here he 3535935358is I hope you like him and The 11th sounds great Corporia.

11-11-2013, 09:29 PM
Ok! I'm calling her done!
Although now that I look at her, I see things I want to fix. Curse the eye of the camera!

12-11-2013, 04:42 AM
I know what you mean Corporia I to have just finished mine and found some parts I wish to change. I would now like to propose to start voting. I would like to do open voting rules are below.
With this option, each entry is voted upon using a scoring system of x/10 for Theme and x/10 for Overall. Each voter can give a maximum of 20 points total. The points from all voters will be totaled and the person with the most points wins.
You may not score your own entry, but you may score your opponent’s if you so choose. That scoring, however, will not be calculated in the final total. It’s simply a way to let your opponent know what you think of their entry.
So here is my dragon.354023540335404
I would now like to share his story as I promised.
Scar eye laughed as the little younglings all shouted for story time. So the immense green dragon told them to sit down. He then asked for what story they wanted. In a loud voice they all said to tell the story of how he lost his eye. So he started.
It all started on a cold gloomy day. I was preparing my lair for some heroes I had been told where coming looking for x.p. and loot. This was normal. So I hid my futon and took out the scary skeletons. Then I gathered all my gold and weapons. I stacked these in the foyer. I then gathered my troops of orcs to guard me. Honestly they were new as the last heroes killed the others.
All of a sudden I heard fighting in the halls. The way it sounded my people were losing as always. I heard spells go off and I also heard some paladin shouting “DIE VERMIN” . Then I heard some footsteps coming toward my antechamber. I saw some weird blue thing sneaking into my chamber. He turned out to be a gnome rouge. I just let him see me sleeping to lure his friends into the fight. Once he got back I heard him telling the party that I was asleep and there was a lot of treasure. The next thing I knew the whole party was in my antechamber. There were four people in this party. They had one female eleven mage. The next one looked like a hairy monkey with no tail I think he was a human paladin. Anyways he carried a sharp wooden stick and was missing one eye. The other was the gnome I had seen and lastly there was a healer who appeared to be a kobold he carried a big staff.
After the usual sneaking around and taunting them for awhile I attacked the fuzzy monkeys and the scaly traitor. I started by releasing a cloud of acid. I killed the mage and the gnome in the first round. Then it started to go south. The cleric just happened to have 10 diamonds and resurrected the two who had died. Then the paladin struck. He hit me in the eye with the pointed stick and somehow made a long gash. I mean how is that even possible. All I know is I wanted that stick. But I had a feeling they did not want to give it to me. The battle carried on to my statue garden were they preceded to destroy all my priceless statues. This got me mad so I leapt up onto the head of my favorite statue (now toppled) And roared. Admittedly this was dumb as I revealed my whole underbelly. I was soon pin cushioned with arrows and was hit with a magic missile. This is when I flew into a rage. The next thing I remembered is chewing on some broken corpses lightly seasoned with nutmeg.
Thanks all N.K.
P.S. Corporia please reply with a yes or no on the voting proposition. If no state another style of voting
p.p.s. How do we start a voting thread do we do it ourselves ?

12-11-2013, 11:21 AM
When you've decided on a voting style just start a thread with the title "NightyKnight vs Corporea: Duel of Dragons - Voting" or similar. Add both pictures to the first post and tell folks what aspects you want them to vote on. Then sit back and watch and after about a week we'll see who wins.

12-11-2013, 02:12 PM
That sounds great for voting, NightyKnight! I love the story! He turned out beautifully! Awesome job!
