vegascat

This will be the WIP/smack talking thread for our ladder challenge. Specifics are:

Jkn v Vegascat
Categeory: Fantasy miniature
Start date: 25 February
End date: 1 April (yes, let the April Fools jokes commence)

The real question on everyone's mind: Will Jkn actually apply paint to mini? :ass:

jkn
20-02-2013, 05:05 PM
I'm painting mine in a metallic monochrome. I go to great lengths to make my minis look untouched!

jkn
20-02-2013, 05:09 PM
Here's what I'm painting... Anima Tactics - Claire Adelheid

Below the official Anima Tactics art and painted mini - and then an unboxed shot I found.

Never mind about it being a fantasy mini. It's the actual painting that's been a fantasy so far :ass:

Didnt think ya had opened an actual mini!! really would pass out if ya did that!! LOL

Hope yours doesnt have the huge mold line on its arm like the one in the picture!!

that would be quite a big filing job!!

jkn
20-02-2013, 06:02 PM
Yeah the mold lines on that one weren't fun. I've gotten that one scraped and filed along with 4 others. I hope to glue today after a final check on lines and things.

oooo...nice. Love me a Rackham mini.

Sorry, JKN, but VegasCat just pulled ahead. ;-)

Sorry, JKN, but VegasCat just pulled ahead. ;-)

Up until I put paint on it and you give John extra points just for me making a mockery of the model! :grin

I've spent a lot of time looking at that picture trying out color schemes in my head when it occurred to me that there is a ton of black-lining on the model in the picture, which is why all the individual parts stand out so nicely! However, I may try to paint some checked patterns on the clothes if I think I can get away with it. No real ideas for the banner-thingy though. Any ideas anyone?

jkn
20-02-2013, 08:50 PM
I think i'll get points just for being crazy enough to do a ladder challenge right out of the gate. Other than that - odds are slightly in favor (by a landslide) for Vegascat to win by about 800 votes. :-D

vegascat
20-02-2013, 09:10 PM
I think its a great way to get back into the swing of things. Don't forget, I really don't mind if you need an extension.....once you start painting, that is. :)

jkn
20-02-2013, 10:00 PM
How am I supposed to talk smack when you're so nice? (then again - I'm really not good at smack talk anyway...)

Normski
20-02-2013, 10:07 PM
Easy!! just unleash hell lol!!

Vegas!! dont Black line paint it looks pants!!!! its ok to show a mini off in a store but to paint in real its not a good style IMHO!!

John!! I think the only real way to see if the mold line are ok is to undercoat it and see if the line has gone?? then ya can file down and re spray!!

jkn
20-02-2013, 10:11 PM
thanks normski - good advice! I've got four ready to glue... time to glue!

Normski

:-P

jkn
20-02-2013, 10:47 PM
Look - there's Claire. Gluing that arm was a pain... only the third thing I've glued so far... my finger was stuck underneath. :-) Bent the spear a bit, I'll have to bend it back when she's solid... The Infinity model on the ground also had her arm glued on and that Guild of Harmony is glued to her base now.

Be afraid... be very very afraid.

jkn
21-02-2013, 12:58 AM
the thing is - I happen to know that Vegascat... who said "can't start until Feb 25!" has already primed.

so... I'm still behind! But .. frankly - gluing is a rather earth shattering event and if anyone needs first aid, let me know and I'll send over a nurse.

vegascat
21-02-2013, 03:12 PM
Hah! No, not behind. I've always considered priming as part of the prep work. Nice to see your model being assembled! Be careful trying to bend that spear shaft back, you might break the arm off the model and have to reglue it. Just remember that if the arm breaks off, to take your hobby knife and clean as much of the superglue off as you can. One other thing that I hadn't heard about for years is to lightly score the two areas to be glued as it helps give the glue something to hold onto other than flat surfaces. Lastly, if things just go horribly wrong and you glue all your fingers together and can't start on Monday, let me know and I'll wait until you're ready (though it'll be horribly suspected as a delaying tactic :D ).

Hmmmm....is she a cute nurse or a large hairy one?

How am I supposed to talk smack when you're so nice? (then again - I'm really not good at smack talk anyway...)

Yeah, me either. Its all good natured smack talking anyways, as you can tell from the ribbing we've been giving you in your other thread. :D

Vegas!! dont Black line paint it looks pants!!!! its ok to show a mini off in a store but to paint in real its not a good style IMHO!!

Normski - oh, I'm not planning to. I really don't like black/brown lining and only use it when I have to. I'll use my normal mashup of painting techniques (such as they are).

Normski
21-02-2013, 05:40 PM
My fav technique is catapult finish lol fling all the paintvat it if i sticks woo hoo lol

Ok I've decided not to glue anymore onto the slotta bases and learn to pin. Fear me. I have a new tool. And trust me. I am not good with tools. My wife is the "handy" one. I'm the computer geek and musician.

Hey, whatever you and your wife do with your new "tools" is between the both of you.

I'm looking at Secret Weapon bases to mount my Claire on.

Hmmmm.....mounting....my my, this thread had gone R rather quickly. :D Really though, Secret Weapon makes my favorite washes and lots of other cool things. I highly recommend them.

jkn
22-02-2013, 02:45 PM
Let me clarify. Cough. :-D

Nah. All of you know what I'm really saying. My wife can build stairs. I can play piano and other stuff. :-)

Yeah - kdlynch turned me on to Secret Weapon washes and then I saw their bases. I'm going to try an order from MiniatureMarket.com which is in St. Louis, Missouri. Pretty much every item is cheaper than TheWarStore.com - if their service is as good then I may order more often from them due to price. They're also closer to me in Indiana (somewhat near Chicago).

vegascat
22-02-2013, 03:01 PM
How's Claire's arm? Did the glue hold? Were you able to straighten the shaft of her spear?

Normski
22-02-2013, 03:05 PM
lol answer that question very carefully seeing as the word shaft is in it and your already on shaky ground with mounting lol

jkn
22-02-2013, 03:07 PM
I now have the them song from Shaft going through my head (damn good song).

Yes - glue held and I have it almost perfectly straight... the SHAFT ... that is. I need to liquid green the joint then prime.

SHAFT!

vegascat
22-02-2013, 03:36 PM
Very cool! Sounds like you're on track for starting on Monday!

The Shaft theme song is great!

jkn

jkn
23-02-2013, 12:19 AM
Oh! Heidi tells me to stop shopping for bases. We're making them. :-)

Normski
23-02-2013, 10:59 AM
Lol thats you told!!! Making them is much more satisfying buying is a cool quick fix and they do look good but self made bases gives ya the sense of acheivment when ya mini is 100% your work(except the mini its self lol ) go for it dude

vegascat
25-02-2013, 03:22 PM
I'm looking forward to putting down some basecoats tonight on my gobbo. I'm thinking about going either a dark yellow or purple on the main cloth color.

jkn
25-02-2013, 03:41 PM
I plan to start filling the gap in the shoulder joint today using liquid green. I've been warned to do small bits at a time with it - so that's what I'll do! :-)

Can't wait to see your grinning gobbo!

vegascat
25-02-2013, 05:28 PM
I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! As for the liquid GS, its not so much small bits as trying not putting on too thick a coat or it takes a while to dry. But you have such a small model that even with a thicker coat, I can't imagine it would take to long to dry, though too much means you might have to go back and do some cleanup.

Normski
25-02-2013, 05:43 PM
I apply GS with a cocktail stick on small gaps give it a while to go off then flatten it with a moist brush!! That stuff can get messy!!!

jkn
26-02-2013, 07:11 PM
Look! A messy bad green stuff paint job on that shoulder joint! I am amazing!

You did a great job straightening that shaft! GS takes a bit of learning to get used to using. But hey, its a step forward!

I didn't get anything accomplished last night as I had other stuffs I had to do. I'm hoping to be more productive tonight.

jkn
26-02-2013, 11:03 PM
Thanks on the shaft! It's not perfect - but I think it's as close as it's going to get. I put another layer of liquid green stuff on and I think I've got it ready to prime along with a couple of others.

I totally set myself up for that one! I should get an "assist" on that one for providing the easy setup.

Not sure if I'll paint or not - got some web designing to do today and preparing for a job interview tomorrow!

vegascat
27-02-2013, 05:19 PM
Maybe a little painting as a break from web designing? Otherwise I say prepare for the interview.

jkn
27-02-2013, 06:03 PM
i've decided to shelve web work today to focus on reading a book that the company uses as their management strategy. so maybe painting when too tired from reading. ;-)

Finally managed to squeeze in a little bit of time last night to do put a basecoat of PP Menoth base on the teeth, bandages, scrolls, banner-thing, and eyes. I washed the teeth and bandages with Secret Weapon (SW) Sewer Water wash and went over the banner thing and book with SW dark sepia wash. The washes are mainly to get a feel for where my shadows should be. I'd post pics, but there's really not much to see yet.

Should have just let Vegas win by default at the start for JKN being a DNF (though if JKN does win vegas will just delete the ladder anyway!

I reckon JKN will just take a pic of the box art and pass that off as his!

Normski
23-04-2013, 11:29 PM
I dont Think JKN will show!! he was mega active when he wasnt employed! now he is hardly around!! think Vegas has this one in the bag!! Mind you it will be a hollow victory if JKN DNF!! would have preferred to see a battle!!

vegascat
24-04-2013, 03:35 PM
Nah, I couldn't do that to the guy - as tempting as it is. After all it would just mean another model he wouldn't have to paint! :funny: I'm considering the challenge on hold until I hear from him, though I will post WIP shots as soon as I get a chance.

jkn
25-04-2013, 12:31 AM
...pokes head in. gets scared.... runs out!

HI guys! Yes - you're right - mega active until I got a job and what a job it is - totally frying my brain every day (in a good way actually) - so I'm super tired every night. The 2 hours of driving per day isn't helping either.

Am I done with painting? OH sheesh - are you kidding? No no - I'm in this for the long (slow) haul.

Sorry I disappeared for awhile!

Obviously - no chance I'm done by May 1. Cough.

Ah its nice to have John back!! Im not sure Ive given a sarcy comment to anyone else? thanks for coming back John now normal service can resume lol

Doing means its actually in progress right?
@Demonn!! it MUST have been a Grammatical error lol

jkn
25-04-2013, 02:33 PM
Damn grammatical errors!

My Claire "Bad Snooker" Adelheid ... isn't even primed! (she is however glued - and I unbent her... which doesn't "bent" mean she's all fetishy or something over there in the England or something? I don't know... I unbent her though - she's a nun now. With a snooker cue.)

Normski
25-04-2013, 05:15 PM

jkn
25-04-2013, 05:36 PM
I will finish... I'm just not commiting to a date (or year). Vegascat is being very very very very nice here - and I greatly appreciate it and frankly I wouldn't blame him for saying... oh sheesh - I win, give it up already - but... I really would like to finish Claire and get beat the right and proper way...

vegascat
25-04-2013, 07:12 PM

I really didn't think I'd be *this busy*... the job is wonderful and I love it - driving almost 2 hours per day - it's going to take another month to get used to it I think. Got some really crazy family stuff with my dad - so... I'm on indefinite hold for the moment.

The free time I actually have I'm either exhausted - or moving dirt and rocks around our yard for my wife. :-) It's spring - and we have a new yard! I'd rather be painting or writing music ... but hey... she loves it - and I love her - and once we get things in place and built and moved she can plant and water and grow without me. :-)
