So you brave boys and girls have stepped into my arena, speed is my thing:ass:. To give you slackers a chance I plan to paint 3 of my FIW figures.
Hopefully you will be able to get passed blending the flesh in the 4 hours.

Good job the figure is already prepped cus some of you would not even do that in 4 hours.

So is that enough trash talk:rolleyes:, good luck to all of you taking part.

I don't even know what FIW is. I don't think I'm going to be very good at this rubbish talk (I refuse to use the American idiom).

FIW = French Indian War, were we taught the colonials how to fight. Which all went wrong a few years later when they used those skills to kick us out .

With a long history of starting competition models at the last minute I'm eminently qualified to get a mini done and dusted in four hours. Most of my stuff was done in less so there!

And nobody best say that it shows:cheeky:

A bit disappointed Shane, won't you join the list ? I thought at first we would do this altogether ...
Otherwise, May the 13th is good for me :)

I may do. I already have a mini planned, Reaper Bones Dwarf, if time allows me to join in but after this weekend break of building a bookcases I have to crack on with Portal.

This means I'll be in front of the pc all day everyday so I can give... moral support:smile:

just to freak you all out here are the THREE figure I will paint, Foundry Miniatures French SYW Musketeers, for those how want to know the SYW (seven years war) was really the first real world wide war fought in Europe, Indian and the colonies, the British help with funding the Prussians in Europe but fought in Canada mostly.

I can speed paint tabletop quality, but anything beyond is probably pushing it for me. It also depends on the miniatures. Those FIW minis would be doable, but they'd look like hell most likely (yes, I opened the door, someone go ahead and say it). I'm going to be pushing myself with the one mini in four hours, but I've chosen one that's mostly skin with little in the way of details (Reaper Ghoul Lord(?) IIRC).

Neat !
My only certainty is that I'll probably chose a Rackham model ... maybe one of these Tir-Na-Bor Dwarves, or Sylarenn, Cadwallon's ladybird ...

[Hey, my status just improved !

I'm gonna paint up a lead adventure post apoc dude. May 13th is mothers day round here so I have to spend it with the wife and kids. Which is retarded. Fathers day is when I get the hell OUTTA this place. So I am gonna see about doin' it all on Saturday in a 4 hour block. I'll take WIP pic's but I won't post anything till after. I am even going to PLAN the model out ahead of time! Wowza. Oh yeah... trash talk... meh. I'm tired now. Later.

Picked up a gamesday 2003 Wolf Priest mini so I think I'll give painting that a go (metal so I can strip it If I mess up) . Hopefully going to get the hang of painting black armour, blending and NMM down. Should be interesting since I'm still learning how to paint them all

OK tec question, I can put the date stamp on my digi camera but when I edit the picture I crop the date stamp out. If I do not crop it then you will not be able to see any details on the figures (might not be a bad thing I guess).

I guess I could post the first picture with the date stamp and then edit the other pictures.

So is there an official date/time for this, or do we just do it as and when we like? Saturday is probably the only day I could do the full 4 hour stint. If we are all doing our own thing, is there any objection to splitting it down to two 2-hour sessions?

gilljoy
10-05-2012, 10:53 PM
Wolf Priest arrived this morning, damn its a very cool mini.

Are there any rules etc? Take it we're allowed to build and prime prior to speed painting?

exilesjjb
11-05-2012, 01:38 AM
you can build and prime the models, you just have to send a time and date stamped picture when you start. I think if you are going to split it into 2 2 hour slots maybe a date stamped picture at teh end of first and start of second to show no work has been done.
Not that any wamper would cheat...... well not much

To 2-Hour Sessions actually sounds good to me, I'm usually busy at the weekends so 2 hours on Saturday and another 2 on Sunday sound perfect. Now to figure out how to do timestamps on my camera

Okay folks todays the day we start this little test to find out who become the WWSPC (Not WUGSPUD!!!!). Post your images when you have them if you're splitting your painting time let us know when you post the wips so we all know what to expect. I'll keep popping in to check up on things.

I want a good clean fight but potty mouthing is welcome... in fact encouraged so let the good times roll.

Mmmm, looks more like grey in this snap, I suspect the colour/white balance is off on this pocket camera. Also I can't find how to set a timestamp, it will have to be done on trust. Anybody else kicking off today, I feel a bit lonely here at the moment?

Second hour finished, just under two hours of painting plus a fair few minutes faffing with the camera, photobucket and forum. Got most of my shading done now, looks a bit murky, but will be cleaner when the highlights go on tomorrow. Also done the rock and most of the basing. My camera seems to desaturate quite a bit, it is fairly muted irl but not to this extent.

No I mix my own washes these days. Choose your colours, add a bit of matt medium, slap it on. So it's matt medium for the win. Get a massive tub from Newton and Windsor for about a tenner. Or get the same stuff in a thimble from GW for about £2.50.

Erm, where's everybody else? I thought there would be more than this i.e. just me.

I had an interesting start to mine last night. 2 hours down and accomplished some minimal base coats, but I had some fun and was painting again! Maybe eating that magic muffin and starting after a couple beers and then getting into those mimosas wasn't the best idea...? Of course it was! Half way there, got some pics to post with my actual thread, but I was on it last night. I'll hope to finish my last two hours tonight, otherwise it'll be Sunday morning. Thanks for the motivation to get painting again!

I tried something interesting with the armor to get a different leather look. All washes are a 1:1 mix of wash and water.
-Calthan Brown base
-A couple of Baal Red washes
-Devlan Mud wash
-Thraka Green washes in shadows
-Babab Black wash in deepest shadows
-1:1 Calthan Brown and VMC Deck tan mixed into a glaze for highlights
-Pure Deck Tan glaze for the reflection point

The cloak started with my airbrush and then went to hand painting because the airbrush crapped out. Need to figure out what's wrong with it.
Cloak:
-Basecoat black
-very dark mix of Adeptus Battlegrey and black
-More mixes of Adeptus Battlegrey and black moving up to pure Adeptus for highlights
-Brightest areas are Codex Grey

#1-OK, ready to roll.
I stayed on my idea to paint a Rackham miniature ... this will be a tower of Mid-Nor from the Ephorat colony (not the huge model).

21140

(A tricky thing, timestamps ...)
See you in one hour :)

#2-Wasn't the cleverest of choices, this mini ... didn't remember it had so many details.
But I'm still on schedule.

21192

So, badmouthing is encouraged during the speed contest ?
"EN GARDE, ESPECES DE VIEILLES PUTES DEGARNIES ! -XD-

[music playing : Client - Lights Go Out - Spetsnaz remix]

-16h20 : Aarrgh !! My mini fell to the ground !!!!!!!

-16h36 : Damages corrected. And nope, Orkhide Shade is of no use here ...

#3-Washes of Badab Black & Devlan Mud applied. Everything fine except my left sock, now full of GW Terracota.
Notes to self :
-Leviathan Purple is a bid vivid to use undiluted ... make a mixture with Devlan.
-Also, Vallejo Air Model Metallics are somewhat unstable ... metallic pigments tend to go to adjacent zones even when dry ... use a thin layer of Badab Black as a varnish to avoid this.

21193

-Hell, what was that Prince August green Studio Rackham used on their bases ??
//Now the hair dryer step ...

[music playing : Monster Magnet - Negasonic Teenage Warhead ]

-17h18 : I know !! PA 823, Luftwaffe Camo Green !
Is that an insect I hear ?

-17h27 : Actually, yes, it was a shield bug.
Another heating session.
I'm gonna try a technique I learnt from painter Sebastien Picque / "JakoVaZor", consisting in zenithally airbrushing some white to accelerate the highlighting process ... may also ruin the mini completely -XD-
Must not forget to apply a mask of blu-tack on metallic parts.

[music playing : Klaxons - Atlantis to Interzone ]

-17h38 : Done. Seems ok.
A drop of pure acetone in my Sparmax DH-2 will take care of the cleaning for now.

[music playing : Marillion - King]

#4- Starting to look good :

21194

I used Rackham Color Cuir Naturel 034 for the rust effects on the armour, PA 838 Emerald in the cracks of the stone tower.

[music playing : Led Zeppelin - Kashmir]

#5- 30mn to go ... last highlights + some catchy details to add.

21195

[music playing : Johnny Harris - Odyssey]

19h26 : mmh ... about four minutes to complete this silly little monkey-gunner (I hate monkeys !!)

[music playing : Amélie Morin - J'suis pas d'humeur]

#6 : Finished !! Gloss varnish drying ...

21197

[music playing : Violent Femmes - Colour me Once]

I love that model! I look forward to seeing what you do with it. What luck that the contest lends itself towards a pseudo step-by-step.

After one hour, Black armours done, though the photo doesnt show it off too well.

Basecoats done for the face, gold and bone.

Any ideas on what colour to go for on the pelt and pelt hide?

Final hour finished, well 3 hours 54 minutes it says on my timer, though to be fair that's just painting, I should really have timed the photos too. Anyway, here's my new mighty warlord.

>Gorgeous work. I'm adding that one to my Inspiration File, for when I paint my own Colony (some day far, far in the future -- possibly when I retire!).

Thanks, Shades. Good thing you managed to grab a box of these, they've become rather rare now.
These minis have been in my collections for quite some time (before I was hired by Rackham, actually !), and I was thinking the same thing (i.e. "for retirement").
BUT :
#1 : according to mayans, the world might explode before that.
#2 & mostly : I may no longer have the required eyes to paint them when I retire.

Now, since this afternoon, "painted Ephorat colonists" = 2.
Hope to paint some more during future speed contests ...

@kdlynch : how odd ! Whatzefrakk is that mini ? How does your "basin & sponge" technique work ? ("because of the heat in New Mexico" would be my guess). What is the point in using a red sheet to work on ? Which brand of acrylics are you using ?

1:10 in, and the polka-dotted plaid slaad is making progress:

21200

answers:

mini: some silly d&d plastic slaad mini, picked up dirt cheap online. i think i paid 50cents for it. lol. softer, bendable plastic, so curious to see how the paint holds up.

Paint: reaper master series.

basin/sponge = wet pallete... keeps paints from drying out too quickly, very important with the very low humidities in this desert.

red sheet: colour unimportant... it's a foam sheet, about 3mm thick. good for when you drop stuff on it... lol. also helps to grab and hold onto cat hairs, which i have tons of (7 cats in the house), rather than them jumping from desk to mini (which still happens)

under this lighting, shading on black isn't showing... not surprising, it's subtle. some shading to go on white, and then the striping. :)

@ kdlynch : thanks for taking the time to answer me in the middle of your painting session :)

>Paint: reaper master series.

Interesting, I didn't remember they had paints. Which range would you compare them in terms of qualities ?

>basin/sponge = wet pallete...

Indeed, I'm familiar with this technique ... but your environment makes you carry it to an extreme !!

> [...] 7 cats in the house ...

This must be like a dream ! ... except for, well, cat droppings.

At this point, I have a hard time guessing where your colour scheme is going ... curious to see that :)

kdlynch
14-05-2012, 02:38 AM
Not quite 4 hours, and I'm calling it done as far as this comp goes... I sense a trip into the simple green shortly. lol
21204

You can see where I wanted to go with this however. The plan, after the mustard & ketchup plaid, was to invert the colours in the white spots (so purple & green in the white area). Quite too ambitious for a 4hr challenge, but it did serve it's function: to get me painting again. :D

Here's the final shot, as well:
21205

I will revisit this paint scheme, but mebbe not on this particular model. Although I do like the idea of a plaid slaad, the paint is not adhering well, even though I let the base coat dry for a couple of weeks prior. In fact, the primer, even with that kind of dry time, still feels a bit tacky after working with it for awhile... I'm guessing the heat under the lights was just enough to cause it to undergo further chemical reaction.

@XUR:

Paint: yes, quite a large range in fact. I'm quite pleased with the paints... most have good coverage, thin well, etc. Yellows & oranges are weak, as is typical with most ranges. Colours are different than vallejo/gw release, so you won't find direct replacements. I'd say they're pretty close to VGC's consistency (at least vgc's better colours... they've got a few bad paints too)

Wet Palette: yep, have to have a lot more water than typical, as it dries out quickly. It's already down 1/4" or so during the 4hr challenge.

Cats: yeah, they're fun... a handful at times, like now when they are demanding me to stop typing and feed them. lol! 2 of them are the daughter's, but we're keeping them as she's currently living in Japan.

They seem good ... but what about their solidity ?
I stopped using Prince August paints because they're so fragile ! ... I didn't want my minis shelved forever.

Alternatively, have you considered using acrylic retarder ?
This medium is of great help to me (liquid form ... not the PA gel crap).

That's when the fun comes in -XD-

Allright, I'm done. He didn't turn out as well as I thought he was going to and now that I look at the end result there are a few things here and there to fix, and overall I think I could have done a better job. As usual my opinion will probably change tomorrow.

To truly finish the mini he will be sitting it water effects up to his ankles with a muddier base. My water effects takes 24 hours to dry, however.

Not in the Gallery, at the moment. It's on my list of things to do, to upload my past catalog of pics to the Gallery. But I do have a lot of WIP threads in the WIP subforum and some entries in the Display Cabinet subforum. The 'Shades WIP Hobby ADD' (http://www.wamp-forum.com/VB4/showthread.php?8999-Shades-WIP-Hobby-ADD) thread is my ongoing painting diary.

Thanks! I appreciate the vote of confidence. I try to keep a continuous flow going, and I continually look for ways to speed the process, since there are numerous games that I want to try out, and I have a lead mountain that will occupy me through retirement! And I only have about 3 hours a week, on average, to devote to painting.

My problem is self discipline. Don't have any...

I think your results and productivity say otherwise! Nice job on the Ultramarines and the Wolf Guard. They're very eye-catching. Tight, solid presentation.
