View Full Version : World Expo 2011

It's in Montreux Switzerland. It's the place from Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" so it's gotta be good.

Anyone else going to this small dammable yodeling country? I don't even have the times or place for it yet but I wanna go, and since it's so far away the Wife gave the okay.

It'd be great to meet some of you funny talkin' people over there for this.

If i'm in the area then yeah, i'll be there.

Peace and love...

15-06-2009, 04:31 PM
Disasters are required to keep me from going.

15-06-2009, 05:23 PM
Yes, I do fancy going - I'll have to start saving now though!

15-06-2009, 05:45 PM
hmm 2011? not sure if i'll be alive then!

15-06-2009, 05:49 PM
I'll talk to Roger and see if we can plan that far ahead. I'd LOVE to go!

15-06-2009, 06:40 PM
If I start planning and saving now, I might be able to make it.

15-06-2009, 08:35 PM
That would be so fun! I need to go to one of these.

If anyone in the US needs a deal on some CHF (francs) I can hook ya up!

15-06-2009, 09:18 PM

How about Canada? I could go for some swiss money

I'd love to go and it's far enough away that maybe Liz and I can save up for it.

16-06-2009, 02:23 PM
I'd love to save up. Have to be able to not fly though, we gave that up a long a time ago.
It'd be real nice to meet some of you folks from foreign parts.

16-06-2009, 08:56 PM
Why'd you give up flying? Arms getting tired?

16-06-2009, 10:42 PM
No, she just caused a flap at the airport.

Hmm, Switzerland = expensive - don't think I'll be going, 2011 should be Australia or China for me.

Because Australia and China are cheaper?

17-06-2009, 06:18 PM
Have you seen how much chocolate costs in Switzerland and they make the damn stuff!

17-06-2009, 06:28 PM
yeah but australia has the 10 deadliest snakes in the world 8/10 deadliest spiders and worst still is full of aussies.
as for china well just be careful you dont get too political - its suprising how many political activists in china end uip in special 'asylums' due to mental health issues. plus the only food is english takeaways

funny question now I've reread this thread looking for the answer, but i may have the opportunity to go to China in 2011 (specifically to cycle along the great wall)- anyone know what time of year the expo is on?

23-11-2009, 09:22 PM
August 19 - 21st

23-11-2009, 09:39 PM
well the china trip is either may or september (not sure which)
doubt I could afford to do both anyway (the china trip is 1600 or free if you raise 3,500 for charity)

I'd love to go, I think if I get my promotion I shall save up and go..always wanted to see the world expo and its pretty good timing for some summer mountains too, which might persuade the better half!

China is amazing, I've been (with work) a few times..its a great place to travel to.

Just putting feelers out but what are guys planning just the week end or a week?. Would people be interested in grouping together and hiring an holiday app sort of a Wamp house :). I only ask because I have done a fair bit of trip/tour planning and if there are enough Wampers going I would do some searching for us.

I'm still very much working towards this. I need a budget to shoot for, and would gor for a week I think. I'm gonna try to pay for as much of it as possible with mini sales. Even going to start doing commissions again I think! There goes my summer of free and easy paint what I want, but I think it'll be worth it. I am going to do MASSIVE damage to my liver while in Switzerland.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to renew the passport. I'm thinking I'll probably spend a couple of weeks riding the Eurail while I'm over on that side of the pond. I'd really love to hook up with people over there.

Having just got back from there, a meal costs about 25CHF and pint sized beer (half liter) costs about 5CHF (actually any drink at a bar costs that much). If you go to the CO-OP there, stuff is OK priced e.g. 1.8CHF for a 1.5L bottle of Pepsi, but you can easily spend 5CHF+ on a regular 500ml bottle of coke, depending where you buy it.

At the moment the its about 1.5CHF to 1GBP.

However, staying in hotels (the ones I saw) is actually one of the reasonable things. Saw a few places where one night was about 50CHF and obviously you are going to want to have half board, because it will save you a bomb.

Flight wise its hard to tell how much it will cost because you cant book anywhere near that far in advance.

Basically what I'm trying to say is I'm interested :]

odd for a beer - bloody hell its like going down sarf

26-04-2010, 12:35 PM
I've got the provisional go ahead for this from the Mrs. The proviso being that adequate time must be given to the bar so she doesn't get bored out of her mind.

26-04-2010, 01:11 PM
We're 'trying to save up - the wamp appartment idea sounds good, but I don't really know when we'd be able to confirm we could afford to go. I think the train return is going to about 350 total for us both - so hotel costs and food means it will be expensive!

26-04-2010, 03:52 PM
I looked into it and is only 12 hour drive was thinking Wamp road trip in a mini bus or people carrier, think it would work out cheaper and should be fun just checking what legals drivers need for euorpe. will do some more digging on appartment. BTW is there anyone else willing to share driving with me if we go down that road

26-04-2010, 04:36 PM

26-04-2010, 06:10 PM
if we could drive I'd say yes, but we can't. sounds like a plan could be forming though...

26-04-2010, 07:45 PM
I,m always planning :) if i could paint as well as I plan I think I may have a few demons by now

I'd think about car sharing as long as I am still in the same job etc as I can take the company car overseas so its not a huge cost in those terms. Mountains also beckon as mentioned so I do fancy going.
